The report of the “High
art, low culture”
During the
class on Monday, I have read most of the articles in
“Additional Reading 2”.Among
those articles,”High art, low
culture” is the most impressive.
This passage
describes the bad living conditions of the 'Culture professionals'
in Britain and the cause of it. The writer thinks that it is the
government and politicians that result in the current situation of
the culture. In Birtain, the politicians are very proud of their
country’s culture(especially live performance)
and many of them are privately enthusiastic arts-lovers.However, it
is so hard to get funding that making a living becomes a big
problem in the artists, just because the fact that artists are
hungry to work in this field, and need no motivation in the form of
job security or a promotional ladder they will automatically climb
merely by persevering in the job.So by now, many artists do the job
just because they feel they must……
I am touched
by the bad conditions of the artists. They have made great
contributions to the country’s culture but
received much less than what they deserved. Since the artists have
a great effect on the culture and the culture makes countries
different, which means that the group of artists
is an indispensable part of the country. As the
passage said :” many artists do the job just
because they feel they must”, what if one day
that the artists feel they needn’t do it or they
can’t affort to keep doing it? If that day came,
it would be too late to retrive the lost art.
But from the
politicians’ point of view,
it’s also reasonable and we
can’t blame them too much.As we people like to
consider things in a simple way, so are they. Compared to the
scientists and engineers, the politicians may think that artists
don’t make a direct contribution to the country,
such as building or creating something visible and usable. Also,
maybe they want to use to government’ money more
effectively, and plus the fact that
“They(artists) will automatically climb merely by
persevering in the job”, they prefer to use the
money in those things that wouldn’t get done
without the money. Both of the two reasons lead to the tragedy of
the artists. It some kind of likes the students recommended for
admission : Even though the students recommended for admission know
that studying is good for themselves, they prefer not to study.
Because they know that it doesn’t really matter
whether they do it, so they chose the more comfortable way.
So, does
that mean that we just do nothing and watch the artists living a
horrible life? Of course not. First of all, they can make a living
as a performer. Also, in my opinion, we people can set up an
institution which can make contribution to the developing of the
culture by helping the artists. Through the institution, not only
can we persuade the politicians to support and honour the artists,
but also we can receive the donation from anyone who want to help
them.
That’s all. Thank you.
