第四章 奈德

 

1. 劳伯到临冬城的场景：

 The visitors poured through the gates in a river of golden and silver and polished steel. Three hundered strong, a pride of bannermen and knights, of sworm and freeriders.

 

A. 大队的兵马poured through the gates in a river, 表现人之多，汇成一条河流。

B. Three hunderd strong,三百人之多

C. Sworn和Freeriders摆在一起：

 Sworn 是指向国王宣誓过的剑客。而Freeriders指流浪武士。

 

 

 

2. 劳勃出场

 

Yet the huge man at the head of the column, flanked by two kinghts in the snow-white cloaks of the kingsguard, seemed almost a stranger to Ned......until he vaulted off the back of his warhorse with a familiar roar, and crushed him in a bone-crunching hug.

劳勃当时应该称帝十五年了。而跟奈德大约九年没有见面，形容大变，奈德几乎认不出来。其实这里说明劳勃在称帝的钱五六年里发福还不是很厉害。后来就吹起来了。

 

劳勃给了奈德一个大大的拥抱Bone-crunching hug 武将出身，思念都是用力量来表达的。

上上下下地打量了一遍over top to bottom

 

 

3. 劳勃外貌描写

 

15年前：

The Lord of Storm's End had been clean shaven, clear-eyed, and muscled like a maiden's fantasy..........In those days, the smell of leather and blood had clung to him like perfume.

 

这里两个有趣的地方。

 A.青年时期的劳勃是女孩们的梦中情人Fantasy

  想到Facy: n. 幻想

          a. 豪华的  经常说开豪车fancy cars

           vt. Do you fancy me? 你喜欢我么？(有暗恋的意思）

 

B. 以前皮革的味道如同香水一般和他如影随行。后面马上对此有个对比。

 

 

 

 

武力惊人：

Six and a half feet tall, he towerd over lesser man,and when he dooned his armor and great antlered helmet of his House, He became veritable giant.

 

Tower over.....指远远高于....即“鹤立鸡群”之意

 

“巨大”“数量大”同义词： Giant ,Enormous, Tremendous,Immense, Massive, Dramatic, Significant

 

 

He'd had a giant's strength too, his weapon of choince a spiked iron warhammer that Ned could scarcely lift.

力气好大。

 

 

15年后：

 Now it was Perfume that clung to him like a perfume, and he had a girth to match his height.

 

即与前文起到对比，现在与他如影随形的就只有香水味道了。这里暗示劳勃每日缠绵床第，身上都是女人的香味。

 

 

4. 瑟曦和劳勃的小细节

Ned knelt in the snow to kiss the queen's ring, while Robert embraced Catelyn like a long-lost sister.

 

瑟曦同史塔克家生疏，切为人自傲，所以奈德还是要尽君臣之礼。而劳勃更凯特琳就直接欢快地抱一抱，一家人的样子。

 

 

 

 5. 瑟曦和詹姆的小细节

 

当时劳勃马上就表示要到奈德家的墓窖里去，瑟曦非常反感，表示死人早死了，还是让风尘仆仆的活人休息吧（The dead would wait)。然后，

 

Robert had looked at her, and her twin brother Jamine had taken her quietly by the arm, and she had said no more.

 

6.Descend 

   A.下降，下去，vi.

 

     文中 = Getting down stairs 下楼

原文：Robert compalined as they ~ed

 

  补： In descending order 从大到小，倒序

7. 奈德和劳勃谈论到北境的冬天，劳勃就开始夸赞南境的优越环境了。这里放一段高庭的描写：

 In Highgarden there are fileds of golden rosesthat strretch away as far as the eye can see.

 

Stretch away伸展开去....  后面说明玫瑰种植面具之大

 

The fruit ares so ripe they explode in your mouth——melons, peaches, fireplumps, you've never tasted such sweetness.

果实熟透了，感觉用牙齿磕一下就会在口中爆开（Explore）

 

关于美味的基本词汇： Mouthwatering, Flavorsome(这个强调香喷喷的）

 

 

 

".......Ned! Flowers everywhere, the markets bursting with foods, the summerwines so cheap and so good that you can get drunk just breathing the air. Everyone is fat and drunk and rich." He laughed and slapped his stomach a thump.

 

Slapp one's stomach a thump 拍了拍肚子，很满足的样子。我去翻了下中文版的翻译，“拍了拍啤酒肚”。哎呦，我的胖鹿啊....

 

 

8. Yet Ned could not help but notice those pleasures were taking a toll on the king. Robert was breathing heavily they reached the bottom of the stairs.

 

很有意思，无难点。撑足了就是前面已经列出来过的Take  a/one's  toll on  sb/sth对....造成损失和影响。

前面劳勃夸赞南方的美食、还有开放的美女，而这些享乐给他的身体造成了很大损害。这个曾经力大无穷的猛士居然下到墓窖里都会气喘吁吁、脸色发红。（话说劳勃是三高吧？）

 

 

 9. 墓室里的光景

 He(Ned) swept the lantern in a wide semicircle. Shadows moved and lurched.

 

因为墓窖风大，所以奈德用手笼住半边火。Sweep，Semicircle(一半都是用Semi-, Semiannual半年的.)

 

光移影动，黑影鬼祟Shadows moved and lurched

          Lurch倾斜、蹒跚 n.& vt. &vi.

 

 Flickering light touched the stones underfoot and brushed against a long procession granite pillars that marched ahead, two by two, inthe dark.

 

烛光摇弋，用的就是Flicker

Brush gainst擦过，触及

I brushed gainst her in the tube.我在地铁里跟她擦肩而过。

 

 

通往死者墓穴的路上是一排成对的花岗岩石柱。（procession列，排。 同义词，colummn)

 

 

Their footsteps rang off the stones and echoed in the vault overhead as they walked among the dead of House Stark. The Lords of Winterfall watch them to pass.

 

足音回响在空阔的陵墓里Echo ,还有在回答某人的时候也可以用这个. 

墓室里非常的凄冷安静，逝者安息啊。

 

Vault就是地下室的意思银行里的金库也叫这个

 

 

 10. 后面提及布兰登被绞死

 Strangle

 Hang 是吊起来，其实是颈椎骨断裂而死

 Strangle就是勒死，窒息而死

 

 

布兰登是法定的后嗣：Heir

 

  

 11. 莱安娜香消玉殒的时候的光景：

 

How tightly her fingers had clutched his as she gace up her hold on life......Howland Reed, had taken her hand from his.

莱安娜在剩下最后一口气的时候，手还紧紧扣着奈德的手。最后那个泽地人不得不把奈德的手从她手中抽出来。

 

Gave up her hold on life 死去（这个简单，就是觉得挺可怜的）

 

 Get/Have a hold of .....得到

 I got a hold of his twitter though a mutual firend.我通过共同好友加了他的推特。

 

 

 

  12. 莱安娜对花朵情有独钟：Be fond of

  同义词：Be keen on

 

 

13. 雷加死的时候：

 Rhargar lay dead in the stream, when men of both armies scrabbled in the swirling waters for rubies knocked free of his armor.

 

Scraddle 扒、捞

Swirling 大漩涡的,水流湍急

 

雷加死了，对于双方人马来说这仗打完了，他胸口的红宝石掉在水里，所以双方的士兵都饥渴滴扒挖着散落的红宝石。

 呃......我的英文名就叫Ruby的说。

 

 

14. 后来奈德提到会让皇后久等了。劳勃就不耐烦了：

 Robert muttered sourly

 

  Mutter 咕哝 n.&vi.&vt. 还有抱怨之意

  Sour就是酸嘛。

劳勃以提到瑟曦就尖酸地抱怨。而且从后文中他在众人面前直接叫她”woman!"成天被人死女人死女人的叫，我是瑟曦我也变态了。

 

 

 15.后来说到劳勃艾琳的抚养问题，胖鹿是打算把他给泰温抚养。奈德非常反感

 

Ned would sooner entrust a pit viper than to Lord Tywin.

Entrust....to.....把......托付给.....

Pit viper 响尾蛇，小蝮蛇

奈德就算把孩子交给毒蛇也不给泰温。他看狮家就是各种不信任和不爽。

 

 

还有一些蛇：Trimeresurus 竹叶青

            Cottonmouth 水腹蛇

 

小劳勃当时状态：Six and sickly

 

 

16. 劳勃想奈德抱怨做国王非常让他抓狂：

 Sitting a throne is a thousand times harder than winning one. Laws are tedious business and counting coppers is worse. And people.....There's no end of them.

 

   打江山容易守江山难。

 这里有一句劳勃的名人名言：数铜板 Counting coppers

 

关于“铜”的区别：

Copper 铜矿，红铜

Bronze 青铜，红铜加入锡或铅的合金

Brass 黄铜，铜和锌所组成的合金

 

劳勃形容做在铁王座上听人废话的滋味：

 .......until my mind is numb and my arse is raw.

胖鹿你辛苦了

 

 

 

17. 劳勃要讲首相一职授予奈德。首相是个任重道远的职责：

 He spoke with the king's voice ,commanded the king's armies, drafted the king's laws. At times he even sat upon the Irion Throne to dispense the king's justice, when the king was absent, or sick, or otherwise indisposed. Robert was offering him responsibility as large as realm itself.

 

中国的王位只有皇帝可以做，除了皇帝以外谁做了是要被杀头的。可是西方代劳者季有可能坐上去。当初詹姆杀了疯疯以后也坐了一会儿。

18. 劳勃提出小乔和珊莎的联姻：

 My Joff and your Sansa shall join our House.

 

 

19. 最后写奈德感到此举不祥：

For a moment Eddard Stark was filled with a terrible sense of foreboding.

 

Foreboding预兆

 

This was his place, here in the north. He looked at the stone figures all around them, breathed deep in the chill silence of the crypt. He could feel the eyes of the dead. They were all listening, he knew. And winter was coming.

 

奈德的父亲、兄长、妹妹离开了北境都再也没有回来。而前不久才发现的死狼和鹿角，现在劳勃就来向他提出鹿家和狼家联姻。不祥之兆，凌冬将至。
