61. A Route of Evanescence
A Route of Evanescence
With a revolving Wheel --
A Resonance of Emerald --
A Rush of Cochineal --
And every Blossom on the Bush
Adjusts its tumbled Head --
The mail from Tunis, probably,
An easy Morning's Ride –
62. I never lost as much but twice
I never lost as much but twice,
And that was in the sod.
Twice have I stood a beggar
Before the door of God!
Angels -- twice descending
Reimbursed my store --
Burglar! Banker -- Father!
I am poor once more!
63. It sifts from Leaden Sieves
It sifts from Leaden Sieves --
It powders all the Wood.
It fills with Alabaster Wool
The Wrinkles of the Road --
It makes an Even Face
Of Mountain, and of Plain --
Unbroken Forehead from the East
Unto the East again --
It reaches to the Fence --
It wraps it Rail by Rail
Till it is lost in Fleeces --
It deals Celestial Vail
To Stump, and Stack -- and Stem --
A Summer's empty Room --
Acres of Joints, where Harvests were,
Recordless, but for them --
It Ruffles Wrists of Posts
As Ankles of a Queen --
Then stills its Artisans -- like Ghosts --
Denying they have been –
64. On this wondrous sea
On this wondrous sea
Sailing silently,
Ho! Pilot, ho!
Knowest thou the shore
Where no breakers roar --
Where the storm is o'er?
In the peaceful west
Many the sails at rest --
The anchors fast --
Thither I pilot thee --
Land Ho! Eternity!
Ashore at last!
65. The Guest is gold and crimson
The Guest is gold and crimson --
An Opal guest and gray --
Of Ermine is his doublet --
His Capuchin gay --
He reaches town at nightfall --
He stops at every door --
Who looks for him at morning
I pray him too -- explore
The Lark's pure territory –
Or the Lapwing's shore!
66. A word is dead
A word is dead
When it is said,
Some say.
I say it just
Begins to live
67. Ample make this Bed --
Ample make this Bed --
Make this Bed with Awe --
In it wait till Judgment break
Excellent and Fair
Be its Mattress straight --
Be its Pillow round --
Let no Sunrise' yellow noise
Interrupt this Ground --
68. Frequently the wood are pink
Frequently the wood are pink --
Frequently are brown.
Frequently the hills undress
Behind my native town
Oft a head is crested
I was wont to see --
And as oft a cranny
Where it used to be --
And the Earth -- they tell me --
On its Axis turned!
Wonderful Rotation!
By but twelve performed!
69. He ate and drank the precious Words --
He ate and drank the precious Words --
His Spirit grew robust --
He knew no more that he was poor,
Nor that his frame was Dust --
He danced along the dingy Days
And this Bequest of Wings
Was but a Book -- What Liberty
A loosened spirit brings –
70. I never told the buried gold
I never told the buried gold
Upon the hill -- that lies --
I saw the sun -- his plunder done
Crouch low to guard his prize.
He stood as near
As stood you here --
A pace had been between --
Did but a snake bisect the brake
My life had forfeit been.
That was a wondrous booty --
I hope 'twas honest gained.
Those were the fairest ingots
That ever kissed the spade!
Whether to keep the secret --
Whether to reveal --
Whether as I ponder
Kidd will sudden sail --
Could a shrewd advise me
We might e'en divide --
Should a shrewd betray me --
Atropos decide!
71. It's all I have to bring today
It's all I have to bring today --
This, and my heart beside --
This, and my heart, and all the fields --
And all the meadows wide --
Be sure you count -- should I forget
Someone the sum could tell --
This, and my heart, and all the Bees
Which in the Clover dwell
72. My wheel is in the dark!
My wheel is in the dark!
I cannot see a spoke
Yet know its dripping feet
Go round and round.
My foot is on the Tide!
An unfrequented road --
Yet have all roads
A clearing at the end --
Some have resigned the Loom --
Some in the busy tomb
Find quaint employ --
Some with new -- stately feet --
Pass royal through the gate --
Flinging the problem back
At you and I!
73. She died -- this was the way she died
She died -- this was the way she died.
And when her breath was done
Took up her simple wardrobe
And started for the sun
Her little figure at the gate
The Angels must have spied,
Since I could never find her
Upon the mortal side
74. She sweeps with many-colored Brooms
She sweeps with many-colored Brooms --
And leaves the Shreds behind --
Oh Housewife in the Evening West --
Come back, and dust the Pond!
You dropped a Purple Ravelling in --
You dropped an Amber thread --
And how you've littered all the East
With duds of Emerald!
And still, she plies her spotted Brooms,
And still the Aprons fly,
Till Brooms fade softly into stars --
And then I come away –
75. That after Horror -- that 'twas us
That after Horror -- that 'twas us --
That passed the mouldering Pier --
Just as the Granite Crumb let go --
Our Savior, by a Hair --
A second more, had dropped too deep
For Fisherman to plumb --
The very profile of the Thought
Puts Recollection numb --
The possibility -- to pass
Without a Moment's Bell --
Into Conjecture's presence --
Is like a Face of Steel --
That suddenly looks into ours
With a metallic grin --
The Cordiality of Death --
Who drills his Welcome in –
About the poet
Dickinson (1830-1886), a well-known American poet, was born in Amherst, Massachusetts. She was educated at Amherst Academy (1834-47) and Mount Holyoke Female Seminary (1847-48). At the age of 25, she rejected all social activities and focused on her poetry writing apart from housework. She died in a coma on May 15, 1886 due to kidney failure. She has left behind a considerable number of unique and splendid poems, although she only published 10 poems in her lifetime. The rest were collected and published in 30 years after her death by her relatives and friends.
After publishing, her poems have highly been recognized. After repeated evaluation and in-depth study for half a century, Dickinson's status as a great poet who has made a significant and original contribution to American literature has been established. She was asserted as the most prominent poetess in the west since Sappho of the 7th century BC. In terms of the ability to command the English language, some even put her on a par with Shakespeare. Almost in all American poetry anthologies, Dickinson's poetry occupies a prominent and profoundly influential place. Her poems have a large scale of readership. Comparable to Walt Whitman's poetry, her poetry works marks a milestone in a new era of American poetry.
