欣赏外国学者翻译的中国古诗（一）

  【编者注】：美国学者Dryden Linsley Phelps(1896-1978，中文名：费尔普），出生于美国Colorado州。先后在美国Yale和英国Oxford师从西方学者学习中国文学。婚后夫妻俩决定来中国生活和工作。位于四川成都的华西协合大学是他们的选择。这是一所由美、加、英三国基督教会办的大学。妻子Margaret任教于音乐系，Dryden则教授英国文学与神学。在这里他们生活和工作了30余年。费尔普对中国的宗教和诗歌有极大的兴趣。他和他的同事Mary Katharine Willmott（中文名：云瑞祥）一起编辑出版了中英文对照的 A Guide Book to Mount Omei 。该书详细介绍了有关峨眉山67座寺庙的知识、传说、诗歌，以及雕刻。然后他们又开始翻译有关峨眉山的诗歌，经过几年的努力，最后汇集成册，以Pilgrimage in Poetry to Mount Omei为书名出版（中文书名为：《峨山香客辑咏》）。这里，编者选录他们翻译的部分诗歌，供朋友们欣赏，看看外国学者是怎样翻译中国古诗的。也许我们能从中学到很多。

      Listening to the Monk of Sichuan Playing the Lute

                     (Tang) Li Bai

     A Sichuan monk,embracing his green tapestried lute,

     Was descending the western slope of Mount Omei.

     For me,one brush of his hand on the strings-

     And I heard the pines of ten thousand valleys.

     My heart was washed clean as with flowing waters;

     The lingering echoes resounded in the frosty temple bell.

     I did not notice the green hills darken in the dusk

     Nor the autumn clouds veiling the folds of the hills.
