ASCOT was braced for a downpour on Sunday with the Met Office predicting substantial rain that threatens to cause a key change of going on the eve of the five-day royal meeting.

As the rain arrived at the track late on Sunday afternoon, clerk of the course Chris Stickels conceded there was now a chance Royal Ascot could start on good to soft ground for the first time since 1998.

While the going was left unchanged at good, as much as 20mm of rain was forecast to fall up to midnight on Sunday.
