Songkran（泰国泼水节）is the traditional Thai New Year that starts on April 13 annually. It’s also callled the“Water Festival”because people believe that water will wash away bad luck and make people fresh. 
  On the day, we sprinkle (洒)small drops of water to bless monks and elders. Their hands are sprinkled with perfumed (有香味的) water. In addition, this festival is for rain because it is the hottest season. 
  Nowadays, during the Songkran Festival, people always wet down everybody who walks past their houses or walks down the streets with cups or buckets (水桶) of water. Everyone gets wet, but it is all in a spirit of friendliness, blessing and fun. People who get wet actually do not get angry because they know that it is traditional.

On this day, everywhere in Thailand, people celebrate and enjoy the festival, especially in the northern part of Thailand.

Naturally, American schoolchildren love holidays. And they get a lot of them each year. Besides having national holidays such as Thanksgiving and Presidents’ Day off from school, students get longer breaks in  spring and summer holidays. In fact, kids in the US only stay at school for about 180 days a year. To students, holidays are perfect. However, parents think there are advantages and disadvantages.
  On the one hand, school holidays allow families to spend time together. Almost all cultures celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of another in some way. Different cultures celebrate the beginning of a new year in different ways, and at different times on the calendar.

In Western countries, people usually celebrate New Year at midnight on December 31^st and January 1^st. People may go to parties, sometimes dressed in formal（正式的）clothes, and they may drink champagne（香槟）at midnight. During the first minutes of the new year, people cheer and wish each other happiness for the year ahead. But some cultures prefer to celebrate the new year by waking up early to watch the sun rise.
