Songkran(泰国泼水节)is the traditional Thai New Year that starts on
April 13 annually. It’s
also callled the“Water Festival”because people believe
that water will wash away bad luck and make people
fresh.
On
the day, we sprinkle (洒)small drops of water to bless monks and elders.
Their hands are sprinkled with perfumed (有香味的) water. In addition,
this festival is for rain because it is the hottest

Nowadays,

traditional.
People
will go to the temples to bathe (沐浴) Buddha images
(佛) and
give special food to the monks. People do good things, for example,
fish or birds and other animals are released (释放) from their cages. On
this day, everywhere in Thailand, people celebrate and enjoy the
festival,
especially in
the northern part of Thailand.
We
can see many foreigners join in the events and enjoy this festival
with Thais. Everybody also enjoys public events such as beauty

Naturally, American schoolchildren love holidays. And they get a
lot of them each year. Besides having national holidays such as
Thanksgiving and Presidents’ Day off from school, students get
longer breaks in spring and summer holidays. In
fact, kids in the US only
stay at school
for about 180 days a year. To students, holidays are perfect.
However, parents think there are advantages and
disadvantages.
On
the one hand, school holidays allow families to spend time
together. Many American parents take time off from work during
June, July or August to travel with their children on
vacations
either
in the US or in a foreign country. On the other hand,
schoolchildren get much more time off school than parents get
vacation time. This means that parents with young children may have
to
spend more
in babysitting or daycare costs. As well, the long summer holidays
mean that students sometimes get bored.
Besides
going on trips with their parents, American students enjoy taking
part in different kinds of activities during the holidays. For
example, some kids enjoy summer camps and outdoor adventure
(冒险) holidays.
Such trips are great for adventurous students.
They also
have a lot to offer students who aren’t usually interested in
traditional PE activities. You can do courses in survival
(生存) skills,
for example. Students learn how to make a camp in the forest, find
wild food they can eat and how to find their way back to the
center.
Students
who are not excited about summer camps and outdoor adventure may
take part in courses in computer game design, filmmaking and
photography during the holidays. Finally, the traditional school
trip to foreign country is always popular. Students can practice
their foreign language skills and experience everyday life in a
different culture.

Almost all cultures celebrate the end of one year and the beginning
of another in some way. Different cultures celebrate the beginning
of a new year in different ways, and at different times on the
calendar.
In Western countries, people usually celebrate New Year at midnight
on December 31st and
January 1st.
People may go to parties, sometimes dressed in
formal(正式的)clothes,
and they
may drink champagne(香槟)at
midnight. During the first minutes of the new year, people cheer
and wish each other happiness for the year ahead. But some cultures
prefer to celebrate the new year by waking up early to watch the
sun rise. They welcome the new wear with the first light of the
sunrise.
Many cultures also do special things to get rid
of(摆脱)bad
luck at the beginning of a new year. For example, in Ecuador,
families make a big doll from old clothes. The doll is filled with
old newspapers and firecrackers. At midnight, these dolls are
burned to show the bad things from the past year are gone and the
new year can start afresh(重新).Other
common traditions to keep away bad luck in a new year include
throwing things into rivers or the ocean, or saying special things
on the first day of the new year.
Other New Year traditions are followed to bring good luck in the
new year. One widespread Spanish tradition for good luck is to eat
grapes on New Year’s Day. The more grapes a person eats, the more
good luck the person will have in the
new year.
In France, people eat pancakes for good luck at New Year. In the
United States, some people eat black-eyed peas for good
luck,
but to get good luck for a whole year you have to eat 365 of
them!
