An old woman lost the use of her eyes and called in a doctor to heal them. She made this bargain with the doctor in the presence of witnesses that if he cured her blindness, he should receive from her a sum of money; but if her infirmity remained she should give him nothing.

一个老妇人双目失明，请来一个医生为她医治。当着证人的面，她和医生达成了如下协议：如果医生治好她的眼睛，医生就会得到一笔钱；如果没有治好，她一分钱也不用付。

This agreement was made, and the doctor applied his salve to her eyes time after time, and on every visit he took something away. The doctor stole little by little all her property.

达成协议后，医生一次次地把药膏敷在她的眼睛上。每次出诊，医生都会拿走一点东西。渐渐地，医生把老太太家里的东西全部偷光了。

When the doctor had got all she had, he healed her, and demanded the promised payment.

医生偷光了她的财产，也治好了老太太的眼睛。之后，他要求老太太按照协议付钱。

The old woman recovered her sight and saw none of goods in her house, and therefore would give him nothing.

老妇人恢复视力后，发现家中的东西全部不翼而飞，于是就拒付医疗费。

The doctor insisted on his claim. And as she still refused, the doctor summoned her before the judge.

医生却坚持按协议规定获得酬金，可老太太仍不付给他钱。于是，医生便把老太太带到了法官面前。

The old woman stood up in the court and said,“This man  speaks the truth in what he says, for I did promise to give him a sum of money, if I should recover my sight, but if I continued to be blind, I was to give nothing.”

在法庭上，老妇人站起来说道：“他说的都是实话，因为我的确许诺过，如果我的视力恢复了，我就会给他一笔钱；但是，如果我仍看不见东西，我就什么也不用给他。”

“Now he declares that I am healed. On the contrary I affirm that I am still blind. For before I lost the use of my eyes, I saw in my house various valuable goods, but now, though he swears I am cured of my blindness, I am not able to see a single thing in my house.”the old woman said.

老人接着说道：“现在，他说我的眼睛治好了。可恰恰相反，我说我还是个瞎子。因为，在我失明之前，我还看得见家里值钱的东西，可现在他口口声声说我的眼睛已经医好了，我反而看不见家里的任何东西了！”
