"I Just Can't Stop
Loving You"
Jackson
sang two duets, including "Man in the Mirror," with vocalist Judith
Hill (pictured), who also performed "Heal the World" at his
memorial. "They fell in like they'd been signing together their
entire lives," says Payne. Ortega says Hill brought out Jackson's
gentlemanly side. "There was this dashing thing about him," says
the director. "A little Gene Kelly going on. He would say, 'Ken,
always make sure that a woman looks her
finest!'"
杰克逊和图片中的歌唱家Judith Hill一起唱这首曲子,“Man in the Mirror”也是如此演唱。 Judith Hill也在他的悼念会上演唱了“heal the world”。
"They Don't Care
About Us"
"You've got kids from all over the
world in this shot – and each one was living their dream to be on
stage with Michael Jackson." The feeling was mutual. "Michael felt
their love and appreciated it so much. Here he was at 50, inspiring
another generation to dance," adds the director. "I think he'll
inspire for many years to come."
"Jam"
The military-inspired number
first appeared on the Dangerous tour, Payne tells us. We did
it with a greater number of dancers this time," he says of the
"powerful" number. The choreographer adds that the crowd favorite
features carefully crafted dance moves. "This shot shows their
unity," he says. "And Michael looks amazing in it." Payne, who
danced with Jackson himself on two tours, says watching the man
move, "was like watching Michelangelo painting. I liken it to that
type of genius."
Just
Michael
"The show was a huge production, but
it was also very important that Michael had these moments with just
the audience," says Ortega. "He would say, 'I want to be looking
into the faces of my fans who have waited for weeks and months to
be here.' So we developed a seating arrangement so that thousands
of fans could be close to Michael." Adds Payne: "One of our goals
was to create those times that the fans had Michael all to
themselves."
"Beat
It"
Jackson rehearses his classic "Beat It"
from this perch above the audience. "Michael loved to fly," says
choreographer Travis Payne. "He was fascinated with birds and
things that could take flight. So when he's on his cherry picker,
it's like he's larger than life. Like a superhero." While aboard
the contraption, which was outfitted with fans, lights and a smoke
machine, "He actually gets to be closer to the audience," says
Payne.
Beat
it”。 Travis
What Would Michael
Do?
Payne calls this a "reimagining" of
Jackson's classic dance number – with a surprise at the end.
"That's part of the mystique and the surprise factor that Michael
always wanted," says the choreographer, noting that the dancers
haven't even seen the completed film yet. Every day that they
worked on the film, "Kenny and I would bring Michael into the room
with us," says Payne. "Every decision, we asked, 'What would
Michael do?'"
"Smooth
Criminal"
Michael Jackson died while preparing
for his comeback tour – but thanks to 120 hours of rehearsal
footage, fans will get to see the King of Pop's final days
documented in Michael Jackson's This Is It when it arrives in
theaters Oct. 28. Here, Jackson rehearses "Smooth Criminal," which
would have featured an original black and white movie on a big
screen. "Michael loved this," says Kenny Ortega, who directed both
the tour and the movie. "It was a lot of fun for him."
Kenny
Ortega
