l        Skimming

Teaching aids:

Teaching procedures:

Step I Pre -reading

1.        Lead in

With the help of the picture, talk about “First impressions” together to warm them up.

Brainstorming is employed to help students come up with some words about “being angry”.

2.        Objectives

Have the students choose a level of objectives for themselves, which they think they can achieve by the end of the lesson. This step is used to help students to do self-assessment by the end of the lesson.

Step II While-reading

3.        Skimming for the main idea.

Get the class to work in groups.

Firstly, half of the group read the first part and try to work out the main idea, and other half do the second part.

Secondly, share ideas.

4.        Learning a reading strategy – Making inferences

a.       What is it?

b.      How to use it?

c.       Apply it to get a deeper understanding of the text.

Show students two examples and help them to observe and discover the features of the strategy.

5.        Careful reading

First, have the class work in pairs to fill in the blanks based on what they have read. By doing so, students can have a whole picture of the story.

Second, guide students to pay attention to the six essential elements of a story, which will help prepare for retelling the story and their language output, speaking and writing.

Step III Post- reading

6.        Retelling the story

Encourage students to try to retell the story by using the six essentials.

7.        Writing and speaking

Firstly, have students work in pairs to talk about a similar experience and make notes of their stories.

Secondly, encourage them to share their stories with each other.

8.        Discussion ( Optional)

Get students to work in groups to figure out how they find “first impressions”.

9.        Self-assessment and wrap-up

Have a brief review of what they have learned and turn to the objectives to make sure which level students have reached. Both congratulations and encouragement are to be offered.

Step IV Further reading & Homework

10.    Offer some useful websites for the students to do further reading.

 a. http://www.mindtools.com/CommSkll/FirstImpressions.htm

b. http://www.brainpopjr.com/reading/comprehension/makeinferences/grownups.weml

c. http://charon.sfsu.edu/TENNYSON/tennyson.html

11.    Ask students to finish the whole story after class.
