Swiss Textiles Award | Alexander Wang Wins

Winning the Swiss Textiles Award is always at the top of a young designer’s wish list. And these days, when even established houses are hurting, the 100,000 euro prize is sure to come in extra handy. Just ask Alexander Wang, this year’s winner, who beat out a talented field including Erdem, Ohne Titel, Peter Pilotto, Alexis Mabille and Thakoon.

The down-to-the-wire decision by the jury, which included members like Andrew Bolton and Isabel Toledo, was a difficult one, but in the end a jury source revealed that Wang’s cool commercialism had won the day over Peter Pilotto’s intricate artistry, which had the second highest number of votes.

The show wasn’t the event’s sole high point — to mark the award’s 10th anniversary, Swiss Textiles assembled the previous years’ winners, an all-star cast including Raf Simons, Marios Schwab and Haider Ackermann, for a panel discussion that also included the fashion-industry headhunter Mathias Ohrel and the author Dana Thomas. The exchange, about different issues facing emerging designers, was fairly standard issue until Thomas shared a controversial anecdote and managed to irritate Raf Simons.

Holding forth on the topic of compromise, she revealed the identity of an unnamed C.E.O. cited in her book, “Deluxe: How Luxury Lost its Luster,” who dressed up cost-cutting as an artistic statement, saying that “women don’t really want linings.” The culprit? Patrizio Bertelli. Thomas went on to say that, as a company, Prada “has made a lot of compromises” and is in serious trouble today because of it. That clearly rubbed Simons the wrong way. He grabbed a mike and interjected that “I disagree with everything you just said,” adding that he knows a little something about the way Prada and Bertelli work together. Then he told Thomas he’d like “to know your definition of fashion.” Robb Young, the moderator, gracefully changed the subject, but the audience was on red alert for the rest of the discussion.

The evening ended on a happier note, with runway shows by the six finalists and last year’s winner, Rodarte, followed by a late-night after-party in which the grinning Wang was overflowing with excitement — and with good reason. Coming on the heels of his CFDA win last year, he’s one of the few young designers who may not have to worry about cash flow right now.
