虚，因为没有(物理上的)实体。但是没有实体并不等于没有实效，也不等于没有实质。

例如：虚拟内存。是为内存，则必须要有实体存在(如内存条)。既不存在实体，所以就是虚拟内存。但是虚拟内存也有实效(类似于物理类存)，也有实质(是属于逻辑上的储存空间)。

光是「虚」一个字在汉语中无法完全表达 virtual 的意思。Virtual 要求：第一，这个东西不是真实的，或者不是存在的；第二，这个东西却拥有真实的东西的所有(或者绝大部分)性质。所以才有「虚拟」一说，「以虚拟实」。
