答：这几个词或短语都有“希望”的意思。

    但是，hope 强调说话人对实现愿望抱有一定的信心, 后面接不定式、名词、名词性从句；如作不及物动词，后面可接介词for。比如：

We hope to enlarge our factory.（我们打算扩大我们的工厂。--- 后接不定式）/ I hope that my suggestion can be of some use to you.（我希望我的建议对你能有些用处。--- 名词性从句） / Let’s hope for the best and prepare for the worst.（让我们怀着最美好的希望，同时作好应付最坏的准备。---不及物动词）

desire强调主观愿望的热切，尽力去争取，以得到某一事物或达到某一目的。比如：

   They desired her to leave the place at once.（他们要求她立刻离开那地方。） / I desire that an opportunity will be granted me.（我渴望能给我一个机会。）

       wish 一般用于难以实现或不可能实现的愿望，因此后面常接虚拟语气，有时也可用来表示祝愿。比如：He wished that his girl friend were here.（他想，要是他的女朋友在这儿就好了。） / I wish you a pleasant journey.（祝你一路顺风。）

    expect强调某事不论好坏必然会发生，强调说话人的“期待”心情。比如：She has reason to expect that the trip would be exciting.（她有理由以为这次旅行该是令人兴奋的。）

       look forward to强调抱着欢悦或焦急心情在等待或盼望。后面接名词、动名词或名词性的短语及从句。比如：We are looking forward to seeing you soon.（我们盼望早日见到你。）
