- Given the most recent market volatility and economic downturn following the downgrade of the US's Credit Rating. Especially now China wants to change its economy from export based to consumer based, what will be the strategic plan of U.S. Department of Commerce to help US to balance trade with China?
- At this
moment, US Vice president Biden is currently visiting China and he
said China did not need reassurance on U.S. economy, but his trip
was seen as designed to reassure China as the largest foreign
holder of U.S. debt that its investments were safe.
How do you view the two different opinions from the public and Biden’s himself? If you were to define the change of the trade relationship between US and China in the future given recent events, what would it be?
-
You entered US government as a Presidential Management Intern on the China Desk at the Department of Commerce from 1985 to 1988 and now you served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Asia in U.S. Department. What connected you with China especially when you were only 20s? You have lived in Asia for 27 years, including about ten years in China, and you must have unique understanding on changes in China. What impressed you the most of your impression of China?
- In 2002, you and your family moved to Beijing for a three-year tour as the Senior Commercial Officer at the U.S. Mission to China. In the same year Trade ministers from across the world have officially approved China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) after 15 years of negotiations. Would you like to share with us some stories that happened in 2002? How do you find the different Chinas before and after WTO?
- Joining the WTO gives China a unique opportunity to develop its economic reform agenda. As a result, China experienced the fastest growth in the past 10 years and is currently the second largest trade partner to the United States. From your perspective, what are the most important reasons behind China’s roadmap to success? Do you think China can maintain its current economic growth in the future and become the world largest GDP country? Reflecting on China’s participation in the WTO, do you think China has done well to abide by the WTO's rules and regulations?
- Looking
back at your positions in Beijing, Taiwan, Tokyo and Johannesburg,
how do you view your experience in China compared with
others?
What were the biggest challenges in your tenure in Beijing?
- Looking forward to your upcoming work within the Department of Commerce as Deputy Assistant Secretary For Asia, what are some of the objectives you intend to accomplish?
- Last time during my visit in US Department of Commerce, what impressed me the most was the drama performed by staff here to show work details here? Would you mind sharing this with our Chinese readers?
