until（till）与not until辨析

　　关于until和not…until通常是这样翻译的：

　　　　until 直到……为止

　　　　not…until 直到……才

可是这个翻译不但对我们的理解没有什么帮助，反而把简单问题复杂化了。

　　其实，从字面上，until和not…until的意思就是：

until ……直到

　　　　not…until 不……直到

换句话说，until不论前面是否加not，它的意思都是“……直到”。【注意，是“……（什么什么）直到”而不是“直到（什么什么）……”。】

我们来看下面的句子：

I    worked    until he came back. 直译：我工作直到他回来。 意译：我工作直到他回来为止。

I   didn't work  until he came back. 直译：我没工作直到他回来。  意译：直到他回来我才开始工作。

I  stayed in bed  until 12 o’clock.　 直译：我呆在床上直到12点。 意译：我呆在床上直到12点为止。

I  didn’t get up  until 12 o’clock.　 直译：我没有起床直到12点。 意译：我直到12点才起床。

可见，最方便的做法就是直接从until和not…until的本意去理解句子的含义，然后再根据汉语的习惯进行翻译。这种解释我已经在多个地方看到了。

下面是until的各种用法。till的用法与之基本相同，但  till不放在句首。（until是till的强调形式）

1． 肯定句与否定句 （既可用until又可用till）

1） 连词

He 　waited  　until it stopped raining. 他一直等到雨停了为止。

He  didn’t leave  until it stopped raining. 他直到雨停了才离开。

2） 介词

She  slept  until 6 o’clock. 　她一直睡到6点。  

She  didn’t arrive  until 6 o’clock.  　她直到6点才到。  

 

2． 强调句：It was not untilil … that …　（不用tilll）

It was not until yesterday that I remembered it. 直到昨天我才记起这事。

　　还原：I did not remember it until yesterday.

 

3． 倒装句：NNot until  …　（不用till）

Not until the film had begun did she arrive. 直到电影开始她才到。

还原：she did not arrive until the film had begun. 

Not until the war was over was  Einstein able to return to his homeland. 直到战争结束爱因斯坦才能回到故乡。

还原：Einstein was not able to return to his homeland until the war was over. 

Not until 12 o’clock last night did Tom come back.（ 昨晚直到十二点汤姆才回来。

还原：Tom did not come back until 12 o’clock last night.

 

4． 句首　（不用tilll）

Until you told me, I had heard nothing of what happened.  直到你告诉我以前，出了什么事我一点也不知道。  

 

5． 询问句：UUntil when … 　（不用tilll）

－Until when are you staying? 　你呆到什么时候？  

－Until next Monday. 　呆到下周一。 

 

6． 时间起止　（用tilll不用until）

　　Ten till eleven  差10分11点

　　From morning till night 　从早到晚

　　1. 用于肯定句中：

　　1) It may last until Friday. 这可能要延续到星期五。

　　2) He will be working until 5 o'clock. 他将一直工作到五点钟。

　　3) She was a bank clerk until the war, when she trained as a nurse. 她战前是个银行职员，战时受训当了护士。

 

　　2. 用于否定句中：

　　1) The secret was never told until after the old man's death. 这个秘密在老人去世后才说出来。

二、 连词until

　　1. 用于肯定句中：

　　1) Heat can be conducted from a hot body to a cooler one until both are at the same temperature.热可以从一个热的物体传到一个较冷的物体，直到两者温度相同为止。

　　2) Continue in this direction until you see a sign. 一直朝着这个方向走就会看见指示牌了。

　　3) He ran until he was breathless. 他一直跑到气喘吁吁才停下。

 

　　2. 用于否定句中：

　　1) I hadn't realized she was foreign until she spoke. 她不说话我还一直不知道她是个外国人。

　　2) I won't stop shouting until you let me go. 你不放我，我就一直喊叫。

　　3) Among the great mathematicians there are about as many who showed mathematical talents in childhood as there are those who showed none at all until they are older. 在伟大的数学家中，童年就显露数学才华的人和直到相当年龄才显露才华的人差不多一样多。

 

三、 “not until” 的两种强调结构

　　结构A：It is (was) not until + 时间状语(从句)+ that +主句

　　1) It was not until yesterday that I remembered it. 直到昨天我才记起这事。

　　2) It was not until I saw Margaret next morning that I felt happy. 直到我第二天早晨见到玛格丽特才感到高兴。

　　结构B：Not until +时间状语(从句)+主句的倒装句

　　1) Not until she got home did she realize that she had lost her necklace. 直到她到了家才发现她丢了项链。

　　2) Not until the film had begun did she arrive. 直到电影开始她才到。
