In the previous article, I have introduced 14 Jiangnan water
towns are jointly applying the world cultural heritage sites,
including Zhenze/震泽 and 8 other water towns of Suzhou.
Compared to Zhouzhuang/周庄
Lying beside Taihu Lake and with its layout of canals and streets
running side by side, the town is also crisscrossed by ancient
bridges.
Yuji Bridge/禹迹桥 was built in 1715 in commemoration of Yu,
the Great legendary Chinese ruler famed for his introduction of
flood control.
Shijian Hall/师俭堂 is a private garden built in the 19th century
by a wealthy local family.
Suzhou is one of the best cities to raise the mulberry trees around
China because of the mild weather and abundant water. The
silkworms, who make the cocoons, feed the leaves of mulberry and
competent local people produce the silk from the
cocoons.
Zhenze was the birthplace of Suzhou's renowned silk industry around
a thousand years ago. The town
was designated China's first batch of 'Specialized small towns' in
2016 because the town's silk-related agriculture, industry and
tourism are thriving.
Its silk industry gradually flourished and became famous
nationwide, and climbed to the peak during Ming and Qing dynasties,
when Zhenze accounted for some 33 percent of the silk products in
China. The industry went through several ups and downs over the
centuries, but Zhenze has never lost its reputation as China's
leading silk town.
For instance, they can learn how
to embroider with a design of simple
pattern or draw interesting figures on the cocoons. The most
important is they can
buy high-quality silk products.
Catering to prosperous tourism industry, the town is
developing modern countryside leisure life.
If you like western food, recommend to have a meal at Suxiaohua restaurant, which is really built in the farm field.
There is one high tower, where you can overlook the beautiful natural secenery when the cole flowers are full blooming in spring or rice is ripe for harvest in fall.
What's more, there are a lot of tea houses along the river. If
you have more free time, strongly recommend to enjoy its typical
traditional afternoon tea, including black dried soybean curd
(reportedly beloved by Emperor Qianlong), rice wine, Su-style
mooncakes, and local desserts.
Travel Tips
1. One full day is required for visiting Zhenze.
2. The town is located at the south of Suzhou, one hour's
driving from the downtown of ancient Suzhou.
3.
The route can be arranged to visit Taihu Snow Silk in the morning,
have the lunch at Suxiaohua restaurant and ramble
around the old street with typical tea in the
afternoon.
4. Barbecue for lunch would be a good choice if around 10
people are in the group.
