I hesitated to make a dicision where I should go in
last two days? I swayed between Alexandria and Farafra
depression. I preferred to travel to the latter, but the time was
not enough. At last, I had to go to Alexandria because I only had
one and half a day. It took me two and half an hours to reach
Alexandria from Cairo by train.
Alexandria is the second-largest city in Egypt and a major
economic centre, extending about 32 km along the coast of the
Mediterranean Sea in the north central part of the country.
Its low elevation on the Nile delta makes it highly vulnerable
to rising sea levels. Alexandria is an important industrial center
because of its matural gas and oil pipelines from Suez. Alexandria
is also a popular tourist destination.
Alexandria was founded around a small, ancient Egyptian town
332 BC by Alexander the Great, king of Macedon and leader of the
Greek League of Corinth, during his conquest of the Achaemenid
Empire. It becase an important center of Hellenistic civilization
and remained the capital of Ptolemaic Egypt and Romman and
Byzantine Egypt for almost 1000 years, until the Muslim conquest of
Egypt in AD 641.



The Great Library of Alexandria was one of the largest and most significant libraries of the ancient world.

The construction work of Bibliotheca Alexandria began in 1995,
after some USD $220 million had been spent, the complex was
officially inaugurated on 16 October 2002. The library is
trilingual, containing books in classical Arabic, Engligh, and
French. In 2010, the library received a donation of 5000,000 books
from the National Library of France, which makes the Bibliotheca
Alexandria the sixth-largest Francophone library in the
world.

Pompey's Pillar is a Roman trimphal column in Alexandria, the
largest of its type constructed outside the imperial capitals of
Rome and Constantinople. The only known free-standing column in
Roman Egypt which was not composed of drums, it is one of the
largest ancient monoliths and one of the largest monolithic columns
ever erected.
The Catacombes of Kom El Shoqafa is a historical
archaeological site in Alexandria and is considered one of the
Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages. The necropolis consists of a
series of Alexandrian tombs, statues and archaeological objects of
the Pharaonic funeral cult with Hellenistic and early Imperial
Roman influences.
Hellenistic Alexandria was best known for the Lighthouse of
Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
The Citadel of Qaitbay is a a 15th-century defensive fortress
located on the Mediterranean sea coast in
Alexandria.
It was established in 1477 by Sultan. The Citadel is situated on
the eastern side of the northern tip of Pharos Island at the mouth
of the Eastern Harbour.
The citadel formulated an important part of the fortification
system of Alexandria in the 15th century AD. After the revolution
of 1952 the Egyptian Naval troops turned the building into a
Maritime Museum.
There are so many bars, restaurants, and venders along the
leisurely coastal shore.
