Jiuzai valley National Park is located in Jiuzai County which is one of the 13 counties of the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture in Northern Sichuan Province. The majority of the population of the Aba Prefecture is Tibetan and the vast majority of the Qiang minority is also native to the region.
Jiuzai Valley evolved to its current state as a result of crust transformation, glacial movement, karst landform and travertine accretion. It is best known for its fabled blue and green lakes, spectacular waterfalls, narrow conic karst land forms and its unique wildlife. More than just spectacular scenery, Jiuzai Valley National Park is home to nine Tibetan villages, over 220 bird species as well as a number of endangered plant and animal species, including the giant panda, Sichuan golden monkey, the Sichuan takin and numerous orchids and rhododendrons.
The Jiuzai Valley natives are Amdo Tibetan and in this ever modernizing world, they still hold onto many of their traditional ways of life. The main religion in the region is the pre-Buddhism Bon or Benbo-Sec religion which is one of the five sects of Tibetan Buddhism. There are over Benbo monasteries in the Aba Prefecture. Stupas, Prayer wheels, prayer flags and chorten can be seen throughout the park, evidence of the local belief that the soul is inherent in all things, including mountains.
