Tiffany Struggling With US Sales

Tiffany & Co. issued a positive second quarter earnings report Tuesday in which the company reported a 16 per cent increase in net earnings to $107 million. In addition, the luxury jeweller reported a 4 per cent increase in global sales to $926 million and a 5 per cent increase in comparable store sales.
However, this collection of good news was offset by the not so stellar news in the “Americas” region (its largest market) where total sales increased by a mere 2 percent to $444 million. Comparable store sales were unchanged in the quarter.
Growth in the US was led by Tiffany’s New York flagship store fuelled by the tourist trade. Company officials during a conference call noted that sales in the US were lower than expected and were mixed throughout the country with no discernible pattern.

Statement jewellery (items over $50,000) and fine jewellery sales performed the strongest in the US, while less expensive fashion jewellery lagged.
“We are maintaining a cautious sales outlook for the Americas until we see solid evidence of an upturn,” said Patrick McGuiness, Tiffany’s chief financial officer.
The company is adding six stores in the Americas this year, including three in the U.S. They include a location in New Jersey’s Garden State Plaza, which opened earlier this month, one in Cleveland’s ETON Center, which opened Wednesday, and a store in New Orleans.
Overall sales and earnings growth were fuelled by exceptional growth in China combined with improvements to the company’s operating margins.
“We were pleased with the results of our efforts to improve gross margin which, combined with well-controlled expenses, yielded a solid increase in operating margin,” said Michael J. Kowalski, Tiffany chairman and CEO.
Second quarter results by region are as follows:
* Total sales in Asia-Pacific rose 20 percent to $208 million. On a constant-exchange-rate basis, total sales also rose 20 percent and comparable store sales increased 13 percent, “led by especially strong sales growth in Greater China,” the company said in its report.
* In Japan, where the company operates 54 stores, the weak yen caused total sales to decline 14 percent to $136 million in the second quarter. However, on a constant-exchange-rate basis, total sales increased 7 percent, due to comparable store sales growth of 8 percent with strong growth in engagement and higher-end jewellery categories.
* Total sales in Europe rose 11 percent to $111 million. On a constant-exchange-rate basis, sales rose 10 percent and comparable store sales rose 7 percent due to growth in the UK and most of continental Europe.
* Sales classified as “Other” sales increased 33 percent to $26 million, primarily reflecting the conversion in July 2012 of five Tiffany & Co. stores in the United Arab Emirates from independently-operated to company-operated. The company said it plans to expand in the Middle East.
