(Based on article in magazine with new content)

Pet Airways has won the hearts of pet owners. It’s the first airline in the world devoted exclusively to flying pets. Some people think it’s silly for an airline to carry only pets. But Pet Airways takes its work very seriously, and pet owners appreciate that.

On ordinary airlines, pets deal with temperature extremes and air pressure changes when flying with cargo. Pet Airways takes a very different approach. It converts small passenger planes for pet travel by removing the passenger seats and overhead luggage bins. In their place, Pet Airways secures individual carriers for pets. Thus pets fly in the main cabin of every Pet Airways plane, not in a cargo hold.

The cabin is well-lit and maintained at a proper temperature. During a flight, a trained pet attendant checks the pets every fifteen minutes. The pets are not fed during flights since this, combined with the motion of the plane, could cause them to experience motion sickness. But the attendant does provide them with any necessary medication. And if a pet experiences a severe medical problem, the pilot will change course if necessary and fly to the nearest airport where the pet can receive treatment.

With one-way tickets starting at $149, Pet Airways provides a reasonably-priced option for pet travel. And pet owners have responded: The first two months of flights quickly sold out. Pet Airways is growing and plans to serve 25 U.S. cities within three years. Furthermore, the airline considers international travel a long-term aim.
