Penguin Parade
There is a large habitat for the Little Penguins on Philips Island. The Penguin Parade takes place at dusk, when Little Penguins turn up at the beach and waddle toward their burrows in the dunes, as if in a triumphant march. This gorgeous phenomenon is called Penguin Parade. The Parade can be observed from the observation boardwalks and viewing stands in the Park.
The Little Penguins are native ones in Australia. They are smaller than other species of penguins and stand up to 33cm tall only. Every evening after the sun sets, the Little Penguins stroll up to the beach in line to return to their burrows after fishing at sea. Their breeding season is from August to March. They will leave their nests for the sea one hour before sunrise, and swim 100 km a day searching for fish.
Koala Conservation Center
Apart from the Penguin Parade, you can face to face with koalas at Koala Conservation Center to observe their behaviors. You can also walk along the tracks in the bush and keep a close eye on various birds, wallabies and other wild animals in Australia. The Center provides interactive presentation and description, allowing you to have a deep insight into the life of koalas.
Churchill Island Heritage Farm
With a long-standing history, Churchill Island Heritage Farm has been listed in the cultural heritage collections and is still in operation. Everyday, tourists can enjoy the traditional farming shows as an award for their exploration, feeling embraced by this mysterious island.
The Nobbies Center
It just takes 5 minutes of driving from Penguin Parade to Nobbies Center, where you will be fascinated by the magnificent outlook of the sea. In the Wild Ocean Room, you can use the interactive camera to observe the world's largest Australian Fur Seal colony. You can have an adventure by walking along the Nobbies Boardwalk at the edge of the cliff and feel the increase of your adrenalin! If you are lucky, you can even see the Little Penguins playing in the sea.
Tips for Philips Island Tour
Please turn the flash off while taking pictures of the Little Penguin, to prevent the penguins being upset by the flash after they are back from the dark sea. Please take some warm clothes for it is damp and chilly at night near the South Pole even in summer.
