Practical Courses vs. Traditional Courses
A university degree unsed to mean more in the past than it does today. Those students with "hot" degrees like computer science or finance are more likely to get a job than someone with a "cold" degree like music or geography. Should universitues give priority to practical or traditional courses?
Universities Should Give Priority to Practical Courses for Students
While there is a demand for traditional courses from some students, I think that universities should make practical courses a priority, and I have two good reasons to back up my argument.
Firist, with the rise in university enrolment there has also been a corresponding rise in graduate unemployment which now stands at 30 percent. Students go to university for the prime reason of getting a good job on graduating. To be deprived of a job at the end of one's education means that four years of higher education has been wasted. Therefore, universities should ensure that the courses they provide will equip students for entering the job market and not the unemployment queue and perhaps contributing to social disharmony. Second, there will be an added emphasis on courses that are of practical use and not just academic and theoretical in nature. What students learn is of very limited use; and if you are fortunate to get a job, companies have to retrain them in current practices and methodologies. My answer would be to actively encourage companies to be involved in teaching, so that they will get properly job-qualified employees and students on graduation will be able to hit the ground running when they enter the business world.
In conclusion, universities that provide students with practical courses geared for the job market are contributing to a harmonious society and companies that engage in preparing students for the business world are fulfilling a vital role that is missing in the academic world today.
