1.A defendant in a lawsit involving large sums of money was talking to his lawyer.

If I lose this case, I’ll be ruined.”

   一宗牵涉一大笔金钱的诉讼案的被告，正和他的律师讨论，“如果输了这场官司， 我可破产了。”

“It’s in the judge’s hands now,”said the lawyer.

  “现在就看法官怎么判了。”律师说。

“Would it help if I sent the judge a box of cigars?”

  “送盒雪茄给法官，您看行不行？”

“Oh no! This judge is a stickler or ethical behavior. A stunt like that would prejudice him against you. He might even hold you in contempt of court. In fact, you shouldn’t even smile at the judge.”

  “千万不要！这个法官可是个保守分子，或可以说是个道德捍卫者。如果送礼给他，他先反感您了。他会在法庭上轻视您。事实上，您最好笑都不要对他笑。”

Within the course of time, the judge rendered a decision in favor of the defendant.

   在开庭的时候，法官作出了有利于被告的判决。

As the defendant left the courthouse, he said to his lawyer, “Thanks for the tip about the cigars, It worked!”

   当被告离开法院的时候，他对律师说，“谢谢您关于雪茄的提示，它可起了作用。”

“I’m sure we would have lost the case if you’d sent them.”

   “我敢肯定，如果您送了雪茄，我们必输无疑。”

“But I did send them.”

   “可我送了呀。”

“What?? You did???”

   “什么？？您送了？？？”

“Yes. That’s how we won the case.”

   “是呀，所以我们赢了这场官司。”

“I don’t understand,” said the lawyer.

   “我可搞糊涂了，”律师说。

“It’s easy. I sent the cigars to the judge, but enclosed the plaintiff’s business card.”

   “这很简单。我把雪茄送给法官，里面附上了原告的名片。”
