Scandals- whether in politics,
academic, or other area- can be useful. They focus our attention on
problems in ways that on speaker or reformer ever could.
The speaker contends
that scandals are useful to call our attention in any fields.
Although I concede at some circumstance that scandals were indeed
disclosed a lot of problems be covered and propel the development
of society. I don't think they are always useful. In fact, some
scandals especially which are relate with personal privacy not only
bring pains to those celebrities but also do harm to whole
society.
First, I admitted that
some scandals really reveal societal problems which be covered for
a long time. Once these problems were disclosed, our society will
try every endeavor to solve these problems. After taking a series
of measures, the social system will be more sounder. Watergate was
a living proof that "power corrupts, absolute power corrupts
absolutely." It serves as a wake-up
call that elected officials are fallible human beings, and will
succumb to temptation and abuse power. As a result, the ordinary
people recognized the need to modify laws in order to increase
supervision on the politicians, to ensure a higher degree of
accountability. Enron-gate, the
biggest scandal in American corporate history revealed the illegal
behavior of the Enron Company to bribe the Republicans in exchange
of the energy policy. After this scandal, however, government
started to supervise the big financial companies more carefully,
culminating in the passage of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. Briefly,
although these scandals are always bring negative impacts for the
masses, the resulting rectification led to improvement to the
government and society.
But
some scandals did not nothing except distract us from pressing
societal problems. These kinds of scandals always involve famous
people's privacy and have little value. A case lending credence to
this point is
Clinton sex scandal. At a period of time, people all over the world
are talking about the scandal. But this gossip actually added no
value to the whole world. People's obsession over the Clinton
affair resulted in substantial issues like AIDS and unemployment
being neglected. Similarly, present Italian premier Berlusconi also
has a lot of ex-marital affairs and became the focus of public. His
sex scandals frequently occupied the headlines of newspaper which
have should be more important societal problems.
Sometimes, paparazzi
deliberately invaded the privacy of celebrity in order to maximize
the profit of media. This behavior always brings troubles to
celebrities. Sometimes, it may bring even serious
consequences. For example, some
celebrities complained that their privacy be in invaded and said
they can not live a life as common human being. And the death of
Diana Princess's love affair was directly relate to the
paparazzi.
In summary, we can
regard scandals as two types. The purely gossip type of scandal
only result in controversial news reports about famous people's
lives, and distract us from more important problems. However,
scandals about serious illegal issues can serve as wake-up call,
and result in new laws or action that can greatly improve our
society.
