你好，我是丹。几年前，我开着一辆吉普车从阿拉斯加（美国西北太平洋沿岸）到阿根廷（南美洲东南部）。回来后经过多年的储备和规划，我买了一辆吉普车——2007版Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (4门) Rubicon，打算将它改装成房车后开着它环游非洲两年。

我下定决心要为我的吉普车装一个柴油发动机，所以买了一个3.0升6缸奔驰涡轮增压柴油机。

结果比想象中花了大量更多的时间、金钱和精力……接着，装上发动机一周后引擎炸毁了。在路上柴油不停的往外喷。多年的计划和储蓄，在吉普车上几个月耗的工作都付之一炬。那个时候，我不知道该做什么，我几乎要放弃了。

经过反复深思后，我觉得这个梦想是值得的，即使为它负债。因此，我卖掉了旧吉普车，买了辆新的。2011版Unlimited Rubicon，而且是我最喜欢的褐色。

这对我的预算和计划都是一个沉重打击，我将不得不面对旅行一段时间后钱用光了的情况。很可能旅途中我会舍很多账，然后在某个地方停下来工作一年甚至更久。

这辆新车装有3.8升汽油发动机和6速变速器。我放弃调整整个动力传动系统的执念。非洲路上，汽油发动机并不理想，但只能这样了。我和朋友改装这个新车花了不到3周的时间，我们还装了一个钢制的安全中心控制盒。

我安装了两个Optima黄顶蓄电池。这样启动发动机的电池和给冰箱以及其它供电的电池就分离了，所以即使蓄电池电量耗完了，发动机仍然能够发动。它们之间隔着隔离器，在发动机运行时两个电池都在充电。

从阿拉斯加到阿根廷，我从没见过一只树懒。我喜欢树懒，所以一个朋友为我做了个面带微笑的树懒玩偶挂在车上。

在引擎盖下安装一个ARB空气压缩机，这样我可以自己给轮胎打气。从阿拉斯加到阿根廷，我一共用了16个防爆胎。

我开着太阳能板，让冰箱运行一礼拜，电池电压开始时显示14.5 v（现在13.1v），因此太阳能板能够轻松地为冰箱供电。
