My experience in the interview of Dell
I apply for
the position of summer vocation intern of the department of finance
in Dell Corporation. After written examination, I received a
telephone call two days before the interview. I asked the operator
the form of the interview, but she didn’t tell
me. I had no interview experience before, so I must get everything
prepared in two days. During this time, I mainly did three
things.
First, I
searched some detailed information about dell.(Dell was founded in
1984 by Michael Dell, Dell sells more systems globally than any
computer company, placing it No. 34 on the Fortune 500. The company
is based on a simp le concept: by selling computer systems directly
to customers, Dell could best understand their needs and
efficiently provide the most effective computing solutions to meet
those needs. Below are the core elements of the Soul of Dell
:Customers,The Dell Team,Direct Relationships,Global
Citizenship,Winning.)
Second, I
searched some questions maybe asked in the interview and the
advised answers. I mainly prepared following questions.
Tell me about yourself.
What do you know about this company?
Why do you apply for this position?
Why are you the best person for the job?
What are your goals for the next five years / ten years?
Is there anything I havent told you about the jo b or company that
you would like to know?
Etc.
Third, I
prepared two versions of self-description, one in Chinese, the
other in English.
My English self-description is as follows:
Dear Madam:
my name is XX,I am a student of the Department of public finance in
Xiamen University, and will graduate next year. I came from
Zhejiang province. Thank you for providing me the chance to
introduce myself .I’m eager to become a member of
your unit.
As a college student nowadays, I am of diligence and
self-discipline .During the three years of study in college, I have
not only laid a solid foundation of the required knowledge in my
major, but also taught myself much of relative knowledge, which
improved my ability to study on my own. As to English study, I got
excellent in CET-4 and also passed the CET-6. I can read, write and
speak fluently. In the meantim e, I took part in some social
activities, which enhanced my capability in various respects.
Although I
major in public finance, I am very interested in accounting, and
wish to take accounting position after graduation.I enjoy working
with people, tackling with challengers and taking responsibilities.
Moreover, I am thirsty for knowledge and will never give up. I
eagerly apply for a position in your unit.
The day
for job interview arrived very soon. I got up very early that day,
and dressed neatly. The corporate bus took us to the site of Dell
at about 9:00 o’clock. We were lead to a
conference room; the director of human resource told us about the
arrangement of the interview. There were about twenty-five
candidates including me, and we were divided into two groups, I was
placed in the first group. The director would interview us first;
the other twelve candidates were lead to another room to do some
psychometrics.
We
thirteen candidates sat around a very big desk in this conference
room. The director of human resource and her assistant presided the
interview. The interview was divided into three steps:
Firstly,
they asked every one of us to describe ourselves in two minutes in
English. I had already prepared my English self-description before
the interview, so it is not a big task to me.
Secondly,
they asked us to describe the biggest success in our college lives,
the difficulty we encountered in arriving this success, and how to
overcome it. We answered one by one. I answered that the biggest
success in my college was that I become open character during three
college lives, and the capability to communicate also improved. The
director of human resource asked me to take an example; I took the
example of barbecue around the sea side. As a commissary in our
class, I was busy preparing the barbecue for half a day, so when we
eat that night, the meat was more delicious than ever before.
Thirdly.
the director asked us to do a case analysis in an undirected group.
The case was as follows:
Assume you were already a member of the department of finance. One
of your clients’ accounts receivable was going to
at term in three days, but he wanted to prolong it for ten days.
It’s not approved according to corporate
policies. But he was a very important client for your company; you
didn’t want to lose him. There were seven members
in our group, we voted a girl from accounting department to be our
team leader, and we discussed eight minutes for methods to tackle
this problem. A member listed our group’s
standpoints in the blackboard, and another member did a summary in
two minutes in the end.
After
about one hour and a half, the interview was over. During the
interview, I kept smiled, shake hand properly, and had eye contact
with the direct of human resource when answering their questions.
Because I had prepared sufficiently before the interview, I
didn’t feel very nervous, and kept to be
confident and professional.
Then we were taken to another house to do psy chometrics. There
were 90 selection questions about emotion and character. In the
end, we saw a 7 minutes propagandize movie about their production
schedule. We left Dell at 12:00 o’clock.
That’s the whole interview I came though that
day. I acquired a lot from that experience.
Firstly, it’s the first job interview I had ever
experienced. During preparing for this interview, I got a lot
information about job hunting, especially foreign-capital
enterprise job hunting. I known the importance of English in
hunting a job.
Secondly,
this experience gave me a chance to look over my three college
lives and made a summary. I found there were still many
disadvantages in myself, such as I couldn’t
express English very fluently, my social practice experience was
still not enough, and when in no-direct group discussion, I
couldn’t stand out myself from other
students.
Thirdly,
I learned a lot from other candidates. Some students were very
calm, and could express themselves neatly and to the point. Some
students were very open and humorous; you would feel very happy to
get along with them. Others had a sound foundation of major
knowledge, when they tackling a problem, they could analysis the
situation comprehensively.
In the
end, I want to say no matter what result of this interview, I found
the direction to improve myself in the future, and I believe I
could behave better next time.
