Ronda Hauben and Jay Hauben, are American researchers interested in the history and social impact of the Internet and the role of journalism in international relations. Ronda Hauben is co-author of the book .Netizens: On the History and Impact of Usenet and the Internet. She is a feature writer and resident correspondent covering the United Nations in NYC since 2006.. She has presented papers internationally on her research on the development of the internet and the emergence of the netizens. She is the recipient of the 2008 Silver Elizabeth Neuffer Prize for Excellence in Journalism in print and online media. 

Jay Hauben is a member of the Mercurians Association of Historians of Communication Technology. His work has appeared in the Encyclopedia of Computers and Computer History, the Amateur Computerist, and two books in Germany. He has made presentations based on his research at international conferences. 

This presentation will look at the little recognized but significant efforts by netizens focusing on international issues to contest the false narratives of the mainstream media and to present an accurate narrative. Among the contested narratives to be discussed will be the breakup of the South Korean warship Cheonan, the NATO war against Libya and the Houla massacre in Syria.
