台湾学者黄一农在《两头蛇》中曾拈出“E考据”一词来描述当下文史学界所面临的新形势，原话如下：

    这十年间大量史籍被整理重印，再加上网络和电子资源库的蓬勃发展，深感史学研究已晋入一前人所无法想象的新局----在很短的时间内，我们就已自大量的明代典籍中发现十多件先前未见的重要文献，因而可能对“家难”的许多细节、当事者的外貌和个性、以及两造的人脉关系等等，均可掌握到令人惊讶的层次。一个有条件孕育“E考据学派”的时代或许已悄然来临。

    E考据一经提出便受到不少学者的热烈讨论，因为他敏锐地捕捉到了学术发展的新局面，现在从事人文研究的学者，恐怕很少有人不知道互联网档案馆（Internet Archive）、谷歌图书、中国知网、超星以及爱如生等等文献电子化方面的先行者。而越来越多的研究者也在实际研究中开始运用电子文献，这无疑大大拓宽了资料范围和研究视野（当然也有很多问题需要讨论）。
    外文数据库以前有所关注有Jstor、EBSCO、ProQuest和我在以前博文中所提到的日本雄松堂的数据库，这些数据库中与“侨居地汉学”直接相关的内容虽然不多，但也有不少间接涉及，很能拓宽思路。另这些数据库也是越做越好，上个月我到上海查资料时发现Jstor已经将《通报》囊括进来，很是方便。最近一段时间又发现了一个可能对“侨居地汉学”讨论起到重要作用的数据库群，隶属于圣智学习出版公司，很值得关注。
    关于圣智学习，此前真的没有任何了解，从其网页上找到的简介如下：

    对Gale有点印象，复旦图书馆的外文数据库中有，其余真的不知道。不过稍微浏览圣智的出版物便感叹不已，比如“Asian Culture, 1845-1949: The Periodical Perspective”
   

    This collection, Asian Culture, 1845-1949: The Periodical Perspective, was previously titled: Asian Periodicals, 1845-1949.
    It is an unmatched collection of unique primary source material from one of the most turbulent periods in Asian history. From the first colonization conflicts with the West to the 1949 fall of the National Government in China, the articles included in this collection offer both first-hand details of Asian culture and the reactions of Western observers and Asians to that society. British colonization was accompanied by an intense interest in Asian culture that resulted in many scholarly publications from learned societies.      竟然将《中国评论》、《中国社会与政治评论》、《皇家亚洲文会北中国支会会报》和《皇家亚洲文会香港会报》等收入，比国内出版界做的早得多。

    另外一名为“Western Books on Asia”的数据库，分“印度与西方”、“日本”、“东南亚”等几部分，收入的文献必定可为讨论“侨居地汉学”提供诸多借鉴。如日本之部：

    Western Books on Asia: Japan is a select body of material written about Japan by Westerners--as well as by the Japanese and translated into Western languages -- between the 16th century and the 1920s.

    The materials explore the social, political and economic history of Japan as witnessed by missionaries, traders, government workers, travelers and others.     所以很多时候，学者们都会忍不住惊呼文献电子化带来的巨大冲击。在著名高校和科研机构的学者是幸福的，他们可以便捷地利用这些E考据时代的成果，从而在纸质文献之外而形成一种巨大的“数位落差”。
