   据佛教有一传说，释迦牟尼成佛后，为报答缅人曾赠蜜糕为食，而回赠了缅人八根头发。佛发被迎接回缅甸后，忽显佛力，自空中降下金砖。于是信佛者就拾起金砖，砌塔。终于砌成了仰光大金塔。这八根头发也在缅甸各地建起了无数的大金塔。
