Teenagers at one German school are learning how to achieve happiness alongside other traditonal subjects such as math and language.

The class sit in a circle with their eyes shut and they count from one to ten, someone starts, the next voice comes from far right, a third from the other side.

The aim of the game is to listen for an opportunity to shout out the number without clashing with another voice or leaving a pause. On the first try, most of the young Germans try to be first, while a few are too shy to join in, but by the fifth time round, they develop a rhythm. The message give other people space but also confidently claim your own. This is a requirement for social well-being.

The Willy Hellpach School in Heidelberg is the first in the nation to develop a happiness course---It is intended for students preparing for university entrance exams.

“The course isn't there to make you happy” Ernst Fritz Sehubert, the school principal warned pupils, “but rather to help you discover the ways to become happy.”

Cooking a meal together is one of the class exercises. Improving body language under the guidance of two professional actresses is another.

The course is taught for three periods a week. Despite the happy subject, the pupils themselves insist it is no laughing matter.

“In the first period, we had to each say something positive about another member of the class and about ourselves. No laughing at people,” said Fanny ,17.

Research by the school shows it is not the first to start happiness classes: they also exist at some US universities, but are mainly based on positive thinking, using findings from students of depression from studies of depression.

“That would be too one-sided for us. We want to show how delicious food or exercise can help, too,” the principal said

Do you have any idea what you would like to be and do after graduation? A lot of people don't begin thinking about careers until they reach junior or senior year, which, in my opinion, is too late.

When people are trying to decide what they want to do, it helps to know something they love. Ever since I was little, I’ve always been doing someone’s hair, make-up or nails, starting with Barbie dolls and progressing to humans. Over the years my family has really inspired me to do this and now I fix friends’ and family members’ hair for weddings, dances and other big events.

I have been thinking about what I would like to do for a career since middle school. I did some research and discovered that I might really enjoy being a cosmetologist so, I went to my hair stylist and asked her lots of questions about what it takes to reach her level and what she would recommend I do. I considered her advice and then did more research.

I used Aveda’s website to get information on the Aveda Institute and what type of credit(贷款) I would need from high school to apply. I found their institute has three parts: theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and professional business-building skills. For the past few years, I have been looking at Aveda in more and more detail. This school not only offers cosmetology, but also massage therapy. I grew up in Minnesota(美国的一个州), so I plan to apply to the institute in Minneapolis that several people have highly recommended .It helps students become “future industry leader in hair care, skin care, makeup and total body wellness” .It is affordable and everyone there is friendly and understanding.

Having done the goundwork and thinking about what I’d like to do after high school, I know that I will definitely pursue my dream of becoming a cosmetologist.

A. travelling abroad    B. service husiness   C. social activities   D. acting on the stage

47. Why does the author think it's too late for people to start thinking about careers in junior or senior year?

A. Because he/she began to think about them when very young

B. Because many people are too old to learn

C. Because a lot of people can't grasp the opportunity.

D. Because many people have little they love

48. We know from the text that a cosmetologist is _____

A. a chemist working at college         B. a person who works in the institute

C. a doctor in a hospital               D. a person doing all types of body care for people

49. The author plans to apply to the institute in Minneapolis NOT because_______

A. the people there are good at others    B. some people advise him. her to do so

C. the institute is free of charge         D. the institute is helpful to his/her future.

50. The author of the text may be a _____

A. married person                    B. middle school student

C. college student                    D. a teacher in an institute

Children learn almost nothing from television, and the more they watch the less they remember. They regard television purely as entertainment, recent programs that demand on them and are surprised that anybody should take the medium seriously. Far from being over-excited by programs, they are mildly bored with the whole thing. These are the main conclusions from a new study of children and television. The author—Cardiac Cullingford confirms that the modern child is a dedicated viewer. The study suggests that there is little point in the later hours. More than a third of the children regularly watch their favorite programs after 9 p.m. All 11-year-olds have watched programs after midnight.

Apart from the obvious waste of time involved, it seems that all this viewing has little effect. Children don’t pay close attention, says Culling ford ,and they can recall few details. They can remember exactly which programs they have seen but they can rarely explain the elements of a particular plot. Recall was in reverse proportion to the amount they had watched. It is precisely because television, unlike a teacher , demands so little attention and response that children like it, argues Culling ford. Programs seeking to put over serious messages are strongly dislikeed. So are people who frequently talk on screen, What children like most, and remember best, are the advertisements. They see them as short programs in their own right and particularly enjoy humorous presentation. But again, they react strongly against high-pressure advertisements that attempt openly to influence them.

On the other hand, they are not emotionally involved in the programs. If they admire the stars, it is because the actors lead attractive lives and earn a lot of money, not because of their fictional skills with fast cars and shooting villains(恶棍).They are perfectly clear about the functions of advertisements; by the age of 12, only one in ten children believes what even favorite ads say about the product .And says Culling ford, educational television is probably least successful of all in transferring attitudes or information.

51. The study of children and television shows that______

A. it is useless for television companies to delay adult viewing to the later hours.

B. it is a waste of time for children to watch adult programs on TV.

C. children should not watch television programs late into the night.

D. children are supposed to learn a lot from television programs

52. “Recall was in reverse proportion to the amount they had watched” has almost the same meaning as ____.

A. “the more they watch the less they remember”

B. “programs seeking to put over serious messages are strongly dislikes”

C. “They see them as short programs in their own right”

D. “educational television is probably least successful of all in transferring attitutes or information.”

53. Which of the following is NOT true according to the new study of children and television?

A. Some children stay up late to watch the programs they like.

B. Children enjoy watching challenging programs

C. Children don't like serious messages and high-pressured ads.

D. Though children like watching ads, most of them don't believe what ads say about the product.

54. According to the passage, whom would the result of the new study upset most?

A. The advertisers                        B. The children viewers

C. The movie stars                       D. The educators

55.What does the underlined word “plot” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?

A. meaning         B. outline          C. secret        D.diagram

A. Being unselfish is very important to make a marriage work.

B. Becoming a person of independence and pride leads to successful marriage.

C. Being able to communicate makes our marriage happy.

D. Divorced people will live an incomplete life.

E. Divorce results from a lack of responisbility.

F. Divorces can be avoilded.

56. Sometimes I think that successful marriages are an endangered social species. It seems as though every time I turn around, another couple I know is getting divorced. It’s a shame because marriage is very important .I believe that if people put more effort into making their marriage work, there would be fewer divorces .Marriage  takes certain qualities to make it a success, such as responsibility and a sense of humor. If partners all understand this, more happy marriages will be maintained.

57. One thing I think that is important to successful marriage is that you should not always think yourself. My husband and I have stayed happily for about ten years. He makes me want to do things for him because of his generous nature. I know there are many times he would rather be reading, relaxing , or working on the car, but he only does something for himself when all the houshold chores are done and the kids have been taken care of. In return, I bake him all his favorite home-made cakes and try to go out of my way to do special things for him. I feel very fortunnate to have married him.

58. My husband is my best friend, with whom I share most of my thought. We find it easy to talk about most things, so we don't have many secrets from each other. When my mother makes him upset, he tells me about it. Things like that are easier to deal with when they’re out in the open than when they’re kept inside. Thus, we have a very open, comfortable relationship.

59. I feel sorry for what my divorced friends have lost. No matter how earnestly the former spouses try to “keep in touch”, no matter how generous the visiting privileges for the parent who does not win custody of the children, the continuity of their lives has been broken. The years they spent together have been cut off from the rest of their lives they are an isolated memory, no more integral to their past than a snapshot.

60. The very first trick to a happy marriage is to be a person of youself who does not imagine a husband is necessary to make you magically complete. Successful partnerships are not between those who cannot live without each other, but between those who can live with each other,There is no room even in daydreams for the stupid idea that there is on earth only one mate intended for another.

第二节 读写任务 (共1小题,满分25分)

阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

Dear Ms Jordan,

I am sorry for misbehaving in class .I won't do it again.

                                               Tyler Vincent Turner

This is a letter of apology that my six-year-old son Tyler wrote to his teacher .It was simple enough and took less than five minutes to write, but I hoped the message I was sending to Tyler was one that would have a lasting effect.

When I made the decision, I hoped it was the right thing to do .It turned out that Ms Jordan was thrilled when she received the note . She told me that in her 25 years as a teacher no student had ever written her a letter of apology for misbehavior . She literally looked like she was going to cry.

I want him to realize that he is responsible for his behavior, good or otherwise .That’s why I decided to make him write the letter of apology .I didn’t tell him what to write--- the words were his own. And he did so without any reluctance and gave it to his teacher this morning with a verbal apology. If it happens again, he’ll have to write another letter. Taking responsibility for your own actions should start as young as possible and a six-year-old boy is certainly old enough.

Nowadays, some students would not like to live in a dorm . Instead, they rent houses outside the school .There are advantages and disadvantages for both.

Living in a dorm can increase friendship and cooperation between classmates and of course it is safer.A dorm is more like a society, which enables students to learn to adapt to each other, thus preparing for the social life later .But sometimes it is a little noisy in dorm, and we are often disturbed each other when we are studying .As for renting houses to live alone, it's better for study as you can feel free in your own room without being interrupted by others, as a result of which, you can have more time and devote yourself to studying whole-hearty . But there may appear some safety problems as you live outside of the school.

So living or not living in dorm depends on your own need. Anyhow, as a student, I prefer living in a dorm.

参考范文

Learn to apologize

The passage tells us that a parent requires his/her son to write a letter of apology to his teacher for his bad behavior in class to teach him how to be responisble for his behavior.

I have written letters of apology to my teacher before.I remembered that at the age of 7, when having English lessons, I pulled my classmate’s chair aside when he was about to sit down after answering questions. As a result, he fell onto the ground and cried. The whole class burst out laughing. My English teacher was so angry that I had to apologize by writing a letter to her and she forgave me.

If I behaved badly in class, I would write a letter of apology to my teachers due to the following reasons.Firstly, I should take responsibility for my own mistakes.Secondly, writing letters of apology to teachers can help remind myself not to behave badly in class. Finally, it is a good way of communicating with teahers when they are in anger.
