Winter Break Visa Applications

Greetings Friends!

The holiday season is upon us and demand for travel to the United States is high.  It’s time for you to make the necessary arrangements AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE to apply for your visa.  Applying for a visa is as easy as feasting on spring rolls, but sifting through the information can be a daunting task.  Qianzheng Laowang is here to help!

1.      Start by completing the application form DS-160 which is HERE.

2.      Then pay the application fee HERE.

3.      Finally, schedule an appointment for your interview HERE.

All services including making/changing your appointment, requests for expedited appointments, and delivery of passports to a designated CITIC bank location are included in the processing fee.  You do no need to pay extra for these services.

*If you are a student returning from the U.S. for the holidays, I strongly encourage you to send your passport and application through the dropbox renewal process to avoid potential delays in the appointment schedule.  In fact, most visa classes may qualify for this service!

Remember – if you are currently a student in the United States, you can and should start your visa process now.  There is no need to wait to return to China to start it.

What type of visa do you need? Let me break visas down into the most common categories.

B-1/B-2 (business/tourist travel)

Often referred to as the “B” visa, the B-1/B-2 visa allows travelers the flexibility of going to the U.S. for meetings with clients, as well as to vacation at one or more of America’s famous destinations, such as the Grand Canyon or Las Vegas. Bring your current passport to the interview, as well as old passports with prior international travel. Find more information HERE.

F-1, M-1 (students)

If you are a first-time or returning student you need to obtain a F-1 visa.  Students going to the U.S. should contact their school to obtain an original copy of the I-20.  In addition, travelers going for non-academic studies or vocational training, such as flight training, must obtain an M-1 visa and bring the I-20. Returning students should provide copies of your most recent school transcripts.  Applicants for both F-1 and M-1 visas must bring proof of payment of the SEVIS fee.  Your spouse and children under the age of 21 may accompany you on an F-2 or M-2 visa.  Find more information HERE.

J-1 (exchange visitors)

Some of you will go to the U.S. to conduct research, train or participate in a short-term exchange program.  This group includes academic scholars, au pairs, interns and trainees in certain fields.  You must obtain the form DS-2019 from the sponsoring institution or program as well as proof of SEVIS fee payment.  Research scholars should bring a copy of your detailed resume (curriculum vitae) in English, your research plan, and a copy of your advisor’s resume.  Find more information HERE.

For a complete list of all visa types, including C1/D (crew member on an airplane or ship), H-1B (temporary skilled worker) and P (athlete, artist, performer), please visit HERE for more information.

Qianzheng Laowang wants you to have a great trip to the United States.  Happy Holidays!
