“Before this
film, I didn’t know there were so many different types of
Black-Americans,” stated one Chinese student after watching The
Neo-African Americans at the American Center for Educational
Exchange on March 18. This documentary was written and directed by
a Harvard graduate from Ghana who felt that the traditional
definition of African-American was too narrow to include Americans
of African descent who recently immigrated from Africa, Central
America and Latin America. A group consisting of 73 students from
various universities in Beijing, two Consular officers, and the
director of the movie, Kobina Aidoo (dialing in from Pennsylvania),
had a stimulating and eye-opening discussion on diversity
differences between the U.S. and China. It was observed that
diversity in China was based on ethnic makeup as well as regional
difference, whereas in the U.S. there were cultural, language, and
regional differences.
