Any country desiring to participate in the work of the IEC shall
form a Electrotechnical Committee for its own country, this
Committee is called National Committee(NC). There shall be only one
National Committee for each country. There are two forms of
participation in the IEC:
- Full membership gives the possibility of fully participating in international standardization activities.
- Associate membership allows for limited participation of countries with limited resources.
In addition, a Pre-Associate membership status provides
countries with support in forming a national electrotechnical
committee, with the aim of becoming Associate members.
The standards work of the IEC is carried out by technical
committees (TCs) and subcommittees (SCs). The committees prepare
technical documents which are then submitted to IEC members for
voting with a view to their approval as international standards.
Full member has the right to participate in the
work of technical committees and subcommittees as
- Participating member (P-member) with an obligation to vote on all questions formally submitted for voting within technical committees or subcommittees, and to participate in meetings, or
- Observer member (O-member) to follow the work as an observer and therefore to receive committee documents and to have right to submit comments and to attend meetings. P-member : Participating member of a TC( Tecnical Committe)
