The new, relaxed attitude sweeping through men's apparel
this season is making an impact on accessories too. Simple shapes
and a warm, neutral palette marks a fresh wind for summer.
It's taken a long time to shift the workboot from the top spot,
but, as if predicting a hot and dry summer, designers brought the
sandal to the fore as the key item for next season. The catwalks
were awash with multi-strapped or crossover sandals that -
when teamed with the season's plaited belts, tie dyed scarves or
trinket pendants - channelled a quiet ethnic
sensibility.
Simplicity is also key this season. Shapes are clean and
unfussy, but without the cold and clinical edge of modern
minimalism. Industrial hardware and urban touches are gone and in
their place are smooth leathers in matt finishes, while the
colour palette is warm - dusted pinks and whisper ash greys,
while even whites have a milky tinge.
Another important element is functional design -
particularly for bags. Think backpacks, boxy kit bags and
luggage-inspired styles. Also of note are belts adorned with
mini pockets, purses and other functional carriers.
A sartorial, geek-chic theme also runs through this
season's accessories, from preppy bow ties to bookish oxford
spectacles, while patchworked correspondent shoes and a debonair
pocket square finish the look.
