1919年生于江苏宜兴，起初他学工科，因一次机缘参观了当时由画家林风眠主持的杭州艺专，便立即被五彩缤纷的艺术美迷住了，下决心改行从艺，奉献终生。中学毕业后他考入了杭州艺专。大学毕业后，吴冠中于1946年考取留法公费，毕业时正值新中国成立，于是他毅然回国，到中央美院任教，后来又到中央工艺美院任教授。他志在将中西艺术结合在一起，将中国绘画艺术推向世界。他的精神正可用他的一本书名来概括，那就是"要艺术不要命"。
