对于书法，启功曾对画家刘宗汉说，他的字没有“芯儿”。对此，刘宗汉的理解是，这“阐明了结体与行气的关系，不能不说是对中国书法研究的一大贡献。”启功“先摹赵董后欧阳，晚爱诚悬竟体”，习惯上是“二王的用笔，欧柳的结体”，最后自成“启体”，书界评其为“外柔内刚、自然洒脱、清隽儒雅而妩媚华美”。

相比之下，市面上启功的画要比字少很多，但同样有品位。为启功做口述历史的赵仁珪曾说，启功的画也极见传统的功力，勾勒皴染，无一笔不见功力，空灵淡雅之中，颇饶秀丽超逸之美。山水画层次丰富，意境高远，竹石画韵味醇厚，灵动婀娜，与其书法具有同样的美学风格。
