Paris breaks a hundred thousand hearts: French capital starts to remove tons of padlocks from its bridges after caving into locals' demands to end tourists' tradition of pledging lasting love

• Paris city workmen began removing the 'love locks' today which are now banned from Pont des Arts bridge
•  Health and safety chiefs fear the practice of lovers leaving signed locks could damage the iconic structure
• The bridge's metal grilles have now been stripped of the 700,000 padlocks to be replaced by plexiglass panels

They have become a symbol of ever lasting love for romantic couples on the Pont des Arts bridge in Paris. 

But lovers will no longer be able to leave a padlock on the bridge over The Seine as a romantic token after today when the council began tearing down the mementos.

City workmen, armed with bolt cutters, began unceremoniously cutting open the 'love locks' over fears that the sheer weight of the padlocks was putting the 19th century structure at risk.
