Chinese medical experts have warned that antibiotics (抗生素) are “  41  overused” in hospitals, which may cause serious side effects for the health of an entire generation.

According to the ministry, 70 percent of Chinese inpatients have received antibiotics, while the maximum number set by the World Health Organization is 30 percent. About 97 percent of 42__ patients used antibiotics but research showed that a large number of them could avoid the need if hospitals conducted proper sanitation measures.

Particularly, antibiotics are overused in the  43  of children. Nearly one third of the daily 10,000 outpatients at the Beijing Children’s Hospital take intravenous(进入静脉的)drips that largely contain antibiotics, said Yang Yonghong, a doctor with the hospital.

“Some doctors might lack proper training on how to  44  antibiotics in a more precise way and avoid  45  risks. Some simply want to play it safe,” said Zhu Zhenggang, president of Shanghai-based Ruijin Hospital.

The ministry   46  a nationwide campaign over the past six months to  47  the use of antibiotics. Vice Health Minister Ma Xiaowei admitted that the government faces great challenges as many public hospitals have  48  supervision on prescription safety under heavy pressure from patients.

Insiders also noted that the overuse of antibiotics was partly  49  by profit-seeking pharmacy firms. There are more than 6,000 pharmacy companies in China that produce more than 1,000 kinds of antibiotics.

About 60 percent of the newly approved medicines by the State Food and Drug Administration last year were antibiotics. According to the SFDA, the country reported 690,000 cases of adverse drug reactions caused by abuse of medicine, including 600 deaths in 2010.

Section B

Directions: Read the following four passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, and C. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.

( A)

In this age of Internet chat, videogames and reality television, there is no shortage of mindless activities to keep a child occupied. Yet despite the competition, my 8-year-old daughter Rebecca wants to spend her leisure time writing short stories. She wants to enter one of her stories into a writing contest, a competition which she won last year.

As a writer, I know about winning contests – and about losing them. I know what it is like to work hard on a story only to receive a rejection letter from the publisher. I also know the pressure of trying to live up to a reputation created by previous victories. What if she doesn’t win the contest again? That’s the strange thing about being a parent. So many of our own past scars and destroyed hopes can resurface in our children.

A revelation (启示) came last week when I asked her, Dont you want to win again? No, she replied, I just want to tell the story of an angel going to first grade.

I had just spent weeks correcting her stories as she spontaneously (自发地) told them. Telling myself that I was merely an experienced writer guiding the young writer across the hall, I offered suggestions for characters, conflicts and endings for her tales. The story about a fearful angel starting first grade was quickly “guided” by me into the tale of a little girl with a wild imagination taking her first music lesson. I had turned her contest into my contest without even realizing it.

Staying back and giving kids space to grow is not as easy as it looks. Because I know very little about farm animals who use tools or angels who go to first grade, I had to accept the fact that I was co-opting my daughter’s experience.

While stepping back was difficult for me, it was certainly a good first step that I will quickly follow with more steps, putting myself far enough away to give her room but close enough to help if asked. All the while I will be reminding myself that children need room to experiment, grow and find their own voices.

65. What do we learn from the first paragraph?

A. A lot of amusements compete for children’s time nowadays.

B. Children have lots of fun doing mindless activities.

C. Rebecca is much too busy to enjoy her leisure time.

D. Rebecca draws on a lot of online materials for her writing.

66. What did the author say about her own writing experience?

A. She was constantly under pressure to write more.

B. Most of her stories had been rejected by publishers.

C. She did not quite live up to her reputation as a writer.

D. Her road to success was full of pain and frustrations.

67. The author took great pains to improve her daughter’s stories because _______.

A. she wanted to help Rebecca realize her dreams of becoming a writer

B. she was afraid Rebecca’s imagination might run wild while writing

C. she did not want to disappoint Rebecca who needed her help so much

D. she believed she had the knowledge and experience to offer guidance

68. The underlined sentence probably means that the author was _______.

A. trying not to let her daughter enjoy her own life

B. trying to get her daughter to do the thing as the author wished

C. making sure that her daughter would win the contest

D. helping her daughter develop real skills for writing

 (C)

Scientists estimate that more than 60 percent of cancer deaths in the United States are preventable through lifestyle changes. Although there is no certain way to avoid all cancers, reducing individual risk factors significantly decreases the likelihood of getting many forms of this dangerous disease.

The American Chemical Society estimates that smoking causes nearly 30 percent of all cancer deaths in the United States — that is, about 166,000 cancer deaths each year. All cancer deaths caused by tobacco smoking could be prevented completely by not smoking and not using smokeless tobacco. For those who already smoke, quitting will reduce the risk of developing cancer. Studies show that after about ten years of not smoking, a past smoker’s risk lowers to about the level of those who have never smoked.

After quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet is the best way to lower the risk of cancer. Certain foods have been found to protect against cancer. Among these foods are cabbages, tomatoes, soy products, and foods high in vitamins A, C, and E. In addition, green and possibly black teas contain compounds that protect the body from cancer-causing substance.

To lower cancer risk, diets should include little or no red meat. Other foods to avoid or consume in moderation include sugar, fat from animal products, and salt. Added fats and oils should come from vegetables, such as olives or corn, rather than from animal sources. Carbohydrates (碳水化合物) should come from whole grains, such as brown rice and whole wheat bread, rather than from processed foods, such as white rice and white bread.

The risk of cancer of the esophagus(食道)increases with heavy alcohol consumption, and many studies suggest that consuming alcoholic drinks increases the risk of breast cancer as well. Studies show that limiting intake to two drinks a day for men, and one drink per day for women, reduces cancer risk.

Low levels of physical activity have been implicated(牵连)in some cancer. Moderate activity for 30 minutes a day enhances the immune system, shortens the time food takes to move through the intestines(肠), and changes body composition and hormone levels. Researchers are studying how these effects might lower cancer risk.

72. Which do you think is the best title for this passage ?

A. Lifestyle and disease. B. Causes of cancers.

C. Tips for cancer prevention.       D. Ways to remain healthy.

73. Which of the following is true according to the author ?

A. A person drinking tea regularly will not be likely to suffer from cancer.

B. Once a smoker has stopped smoking, there is almost no chance of getting cancers.

C. A balanced diet is absolutely effective in preventing one from getting cancer.

D. Those who have quitted smoking for 10 years and non-smokers have about the same cancer risk.

74. What kind of people increase their chances of getting cancers ?

A. Those whose foods contain less sugar, animal fat, and salt.

B. One who is not moderate in drinking or eating.

C. Those who have one or two drinks regularly.

D. Those whose diet contains little red meat and a lot of vegetables.

75. The last paragraph implies that _______.

A. food’s staying in one’s body for too long a time might be related to a kind of cancer

B. the reasons why physical activity lowers cancer risk are clear

C. the more you exercise, the lower cancer risk you will take

D. plenty of physical exercise is most important for one to remain healthy

Section C

Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.

A. How museums function?

B. Museums display everything that is preserved.

C. Museums always seek to add their collections.

D. Museums are places where you can learn something.

AB. People can benefit a lot from visiting museums.

AC. People can have access to appreciating those famous works of art in the exhibitions held by museums.

76. ______

Museums are places where collections of objects are preserved and put on show. The objects may be anything found in nature made by man. There are museums devoted to art, science, history, industry, and technology.

77. ______

But museums are no longer just storehouses for collections. Today nearly all museums, large or small, carry on educational programmes. Museums offer guided tours, lectures, films, music recitals, art lessons, and other attractions. Many large museums have large libraries open to qualified researchers. Often museums collect more objects than they have room to display. The best are chosen for exhibition, and the rest are kept in a study collection. These study collections can be used by students, researchers, and scholars.

78. ______

Museums work constantly to improve their collections and ways of displaying them. All museums share a common aim—to attract visitors and help them to understand and enjoy the collections. Museums are always on the watch for new additions to their collections. Museums also accept gifts, but the large museums no longer accept everything that is offered to them. They accept only objects of collections that meet their high standards.

79. ______

Museums often arrange loan exhibitions of important works from private owners, art dealers and other museums. In this way a famous masterpiece may be viewed by people who otherwise might never have the chance to see it. For example, in 1963 the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City exhibited one of the world’s most famous ladies: Mona Lisa, painted by Leonardo da Vinci. The government of France had lent the painting to the United States. Attendance at the Metropolitan had reached an all-time high during the month the Mona Lisa was shown there.

80. ______

What is to be gained from visiting museums?  Museum exhibits can teach us about the world in which we live ----the materials it is made of, the trees, and plants that cover it, and the animals that have lived on it since its beginning. We can learn about the activities of man----his history and development and his accomplishments in arts and crafts. Most people see a great work of art for the first time in a museum. We can see wonderful examples of what man had been able to create out of clay, stone, metal, and wood or with a paintbrush and paints. We cannot all be explorers or collectors in other lands. But in a museum we can enjoy for ourselves the objects that have been gathered from every part of the world.

Section  D

Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.

When bats go out to hunt, they send out sonar(声纳) signals at such high frequencies and in such rapid bursts that they can hear the signals bounce off mosquitoes in midair. They then zero in on the insects and get ready for an attack. Dolphins use the same technique to find their dinners. It’s called echolocation(回声定位法), a technique that uses sound to identify objects by the echoes they produce.

18-year-old Ben is one of the people known to use “Echolocation” as a primary means of navigating the world on land. His eyes are artificial, but his brain has adapted to allow him to evaluate his environment. He makes a “clicking” sound to communicate with objects and people around him.

Scientists have discovered that in the brains of the blind the visual cortex(皮层) has not become useless, as they once believed. When blind people use another sense — touch or hearing, for example — to substitute for sight, the brain’s visual cortex becomes active, even though no images reach it from the optic(视觉) nerve. Echolocation creates its own images.

Ben says every object in his life talks to him in ways that no one else can hear or understand. And he is not alone. 44-year-old Daniel also uses echolocation and has become an expert on it. “I have mental images that are very rich, very complex. They simply do not possess the visual element,” Daniel says.

It’s like a myth(误区) that blind people’s other senses compensate for their lack of sight. The fact is blind people don’t have a more acute sense of smell, taste or touch; they can use their other senses or their other parts of the body more effectively and fully to feel and “see” the world.

(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NOT MORE THAN 10 words.)

81. Dolphins find their food by _____ and receiving the echoes.

82. Why does the author use the examples of bats and dolphins at the beginning of the passage?

83. Scientists used to believe that the visual cortex in the brains of the blind was _____.

84. How do blind people like Ben feel and “see” the world?
