While my father was an officer of the British army in South Africa, we lived in a large cabin, which had two stories. One evening when my father, my sister and I were sitting together, I noticed that father, who was sitting facing the window, turned very pale. Being a soldier’s daughter and fearing to alarm my sick sister, I sat quiet waiting for my father’s orders. Soon he said in a steady voice: “Maggie and Cindy, a friend of mine is coming here to see me this evening, and I wish to be alone with him. Therefore I wish you to go up to your own room.” We obeyed immediately, went to our room, and closed the door.

Very soon I heard a strange noise. Fearing that there was some danger near, I seized the pistol. Then I heard my father cry out, “For mercy’s sake, child, open the door.” I did so, and to my horror, I saw not a friend of his, but the worst enemy of the soldier in Africa, the gorilla. He was overtaking my father, and, recovering my senses just in time, I raised the pistol and fired. For once I aimed well, and the animal fell backward with an angry scream. Father quickly took the still smoking pistol from my hand, and fired another shot.

DrJerid Fisher does not believe in beating around the bush. When he thinks you should do something, he’ll tell you. That’s why the name of Fisher’s new health and fitness program is SKYSshort for Stop Killing Yourself Slowly.

“What we are trying to do is to make people realize how their lifestyles may be affecting their health,” says Fisher, a clinical psychologist (心理医生) at the university of Rochester's School of Medicine. “We want them to see how the system of our society, particularly in the last century, has led people to give up the responsibility for their own well-being.

In comparing the 10 leading causes of the death in 1900 and in 1983, Fisher said, he found nine of the early ones have been got rid of, only to be replaced today by diseases brought on primarily by fast or negligent (疏忽大意的) living. “It’s ironic (讽刺的) that we had beaten most of the infectious (传染的) sicknesses by the turn of the century and now we have 10 different ones, including heart attacks, strokes (中风) and other diseases related to lifestyle,” Fisher said. “They can also be beaten, but not only with pills.”

Through SKYS, Fisher gives his advice to his clients mostly middle-aged men in all the things that contribute to symptoms (症状) of modern physical and emotional ill health: diet, exercise, drinking habits and attitude towards life. Fisher says why some people pay little attention to personal health is linked to the American lifestyle. “So much attention is paid to new advances in medicine,” he said, “that people believe there will be instant cures when their time comes.”

Passage D

Chances are that you will meet with a dadakulaci during a tour of Fiji. Dadakulaci are sea snakes, known in English as yellow-lipped sea kraits. Laticauda colubrine, to give them their correct scientific name, are quite common in Fiji waters.

No one should be upset at seeing one of these handsome creatures. They are generally mild and will avoid humans wherever possible.

Dadakulaci are meat-eating animals that feed primarily on eels, which they always kill by injecting potent venom (毒液). Feeding seems a rather risky activity as large fish bones may cut through its body wall!

Dadakulaci are amphibious (两栖的). They come ashore to rest and to lay their eggs. They are usually very timid and tend to stay away from human habitation.

While they are extremely mild mannered, there are some stories associated with them that need correcting. Many people believe that these snakes cannot open their mouths sufficiently to tear human skin, that they have rear fangs (毒牙) and that they are not poisonous. All three of the above are incorrect. Like all snakes dadakulaci can disarticulate (使关节脱落) their jaws and do so when they strike. They can open them so that they are one hundred and eighty degrees apart. The fangs are front mounted, like their better-known relatives, the cobras. Finally, sea snake venom is one of the most deadly in the animal kingdom.

Dadakulaci are peaceful in the extreme. If they are tempted to bite they may still not choose to use venom. Finally they have small venom stocks and if they have recently hunted they may have no ‘weapon’ left. Whatever the reason, if you don’t tease these lovely snakes, they will happily stay out of your way. Look but don’t touch is an excellent motto here.

72.   Humans are unlikely to die from dadakulaci bite because dadakulaci _________.

       A.    can’t tear human skin                          B.    haven’t enough venom

       C.    prefer to avoid places where humans go       D.    can’t open their mouths wide enough

73.   The writer is trying to make the reader _________.

       A.    fear the snake                                     B.    praise the snake

       C.    respect the snake                                D.    avoid the snake

74.   Which of the following statements about dadakulaci is TRUE?

A.       Ddakulaci will die soon after they swallow a fish.

B.        Ddakulaci fangs are at the front of its mouth.

C.        Ddakulaci use venom every time they strike.

D.       Ddakulaci cannot live without water.
