No one wants to be tested.
We would all like to get a driver’s license without answering
questions about rights of way or showing that we can parallel park
a car. Many future lawyers and doctors probably wish they could
join their__37___ without taking an exam.
But tests and standards are necessary
professionals. In schools too exams play a ___38___ role. They tell
public officials whether new school programs are making a
difference and where new __39____are likely to pay off. They tell
teachers what their students have learned— and have not. They tell
parents how their children are doing compared with others their
age. They encourage students to make more effort.
It is important to
__40____ that for most of century, education used intelligence test
to decide which children should get a high-quality education. The
point of IQ testing was to find out how much children were capable
of learning rather than to test what they had__41_____learned.
Based on IQ scores, millions of children were assigned to
dumbed-down(呆板的) programs instead of
solid courses in science, math, history, literature and foreign
language.
This history reminds us
that tests should be used to improve education. Every child should
have __42___ to a high-quality education. Students should have full
opportunity to learn what will be tested, otherwise their scores
will merely reflect whether they come from an educated
family.
In the past few years, we
have seen the enormous benefits that flow to disadvantaged students
because of the information__43____ by state testes. Those who fall
behind are now getting extra instruction in after-school classes
and summer programs. In their efforts to improve students
performance, states are __44____ teachers’ salaries, testing new
teachers and insisting on better teacher education.
Performance in education means the mastery of both knowledge and
skills. This is why it is reasonable to test teachers to make sure
they know their subject matter, as well as how to teach it to young
children, and this is why it is reasonable to ___45____ whether
students are ready to advance to the next grade or graduate from
high school.

●Fill the company’s culture with self-disciplined

but they feel like ___57___ processes to people on the island.
Good-to-great companies had no name for their changes; there was no

quiet, purposeful process of__59____ what needed to be
done to create the best future results, then simply took those

Directions: Read the following passage. Each
passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements.
For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D.
Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in
the passage you have just read.
A
The medical world is
gradually realizing that the quality of the environment in
hospitals may play a significant role in the process of recovery
from illness.
As part of a
nationwide effort in Britain to bring art out of the galleries and
into public places, some of the country’s most talented artists
have been called in to transform older hospitals and to soften the
hard edges of modern buildings. Of the 2,500 National Heath Service
hospitals in Britain, almost 100 now have significant collections
of contemporary art in corridors, waiting areas and treatment
rooms.
These recent
initiatives owe a great deal to one artist, Peter Senior, who set
up his studio at a Manchester Hospital in northeastern England
during the early 1970s. He felt the artist had lost his place in
modern society, and that art should be enjoyed by a wider
audience.
A typical hospital
waiting room might have as many as 5,000 visitors each week. What a
better place to hold regular exhibitions of art! Senior held the
first exhibition of his own paintings in the outpatients waiting
area of the Manchester Royal Hospital in 1975. Believed to be
Britain’s first hospital artist, Senior was so much in demand that
he was soon joined by a team of six young art school
graduates.
The effect is
striking. Now in the corridors and waiting rooms the visitor
experiences a full view of fresh colors, playful images and restful
courtyards.
The quality of the
environment may reduce the need of expensive drugs when a patient
is recovering from an illness. A study has shown that patients who
had a view onto a garden needed half the number of strong
painkillers compared with patients who had no view at all or only a
brick wall to look at.
61.
According to the passage, the underlined part “ to soften the hard
edges of modern buidings” means________.
A. to pull down hospital
buildings

D. to make the corners of
hospital buildings round

graduates in order to show______.
A. visitors to hospitals
are warmly received
B. the contribution of
Peter Senior is highly appreciated
C. the hard edges of
hospital are being restored
D. the role of the
hospital environment is being recognized
63. After the improvement of the hospital
environment,______.
A. patients are no longer
wholly dependent on expensive drugs
B. patients no longer need
drugs in their recovery
C. patients need
good-quality drugs in their recovery
D. patients use fewer pain
killers in their recovery
64. The writer’s attitude towards the effect of
art exhibitions in hospital is_______.
A. suspicious B.
positive
C.
neutral D.
unfavorable

The
smuggler(走私贩) in many ways is just
another international businessman and his
turnover(营业额) would do credit to many
international corporations. His business happens to be illegal and
risky, but look at the stakes(赌注)
involved:﹩5 billon worth of heroin
smuggled into the United States each year, and
﹩1.5 billion in gold worth of heroin smuggled pipelines to
India and Indonesia, to France and Morocco, to Brazil and Turkey.
Perhaps half of all the watches made in Switzerland reach their
eventual wearers by some back door. Most of this illegal trade is
carried on with all the efficiency of any multinational company.
Entirely legitimate(合法的)businesses, such as a
travel bureau or an import-export agency, are also often fronts for
smuggling
organizations. One of the world’s largest gold smugglers also owned
and operated the franchise for a leading make of British cars in a
small Middle Eastern country.
A
smuggling syndicate(黑社会组织) operates much like any
other business. The boss is really a chief executive. He makes all
the plans, establishes international contacts, and thinks up the
smuggling routs and method but keeps himself away from actual
operations. He is aided by a handful of managers looking after such
specialties as financing, travel( one reason why many smuggling
syndicates find it handy to have their own travel agency), the
bribing of airline or customs officials, and recruitment of
delivery staff, or mules as they called. There may also be someone
in charge of local arrangements in the countries to which the
smuggled goods is going.
Another similarity between
legitimate business and its illegal counterpart is price
fluctuation(波动)。
Just as
the prices of products traded legally vary with quality and market
conditions such as supply and demand, so do the prices of goods go
up and down in the smuggling trade. Consider the price of drugs.
Heroin and cannabis, in whatever form or by whatever name, cone in
several grades, each with a going price(现价)。
The
wholesale price at which big dealers sell to big dealers is less
than the street price. When the authorities are successful in
reducing the supply, the price of all grades rises.
68. The main idea for this passage is
_________.
A. The Comparison
between Legitimate Business and Its Illegal Counterpart.
B. The similarities
between Legitimate Business and Smuggling.
C. Smugglers May Make
Great profit from Both Activities.
D. The Boss in
Smuggling Syndicate is a Chief Executive.
69.When is the price going down?
A. The quality of the
goods and market condition are not very well.
B. The quality of
goods and market condition vary.
C. Unbalanced between
supply and demand.
D. The price of other
goods fluctuates.
70. It can be inferred that a
smuggler_________.
A. may make plan and
establish international contacts.
B. is a real
boss.
C. may make money in
different ways.
D. may sell other
goods.
71. One of the best ways smugglers usually take
is______.
A. to set up
multinational companies
B. to engage in
illegal business only
C. to make legitimate
business as fronts for smuggling organizations
D. to make good
profits from both activities

It is very important to
keep your hair healthy. Here are five ways for you.
72.________
Good fats are also
called necessary fatty acids which the body can’t produce
naturally. Eating these types of fats will help promote healthy
skin, nails, teeth and hair. They can be found in the form of oil,
or in food such as seeds, nuts and olives.
73._________
Hair is nothing more
than dead protein. But that doesn’t mean that it is not important.
A lack of it can cause slow growth and thinning, Where on the
contrary, getting enough amounts can help promotes growth. Good
choices to include in the diet would be eggs, lean meats, tofu,
fish, yogurt and beans.
74._________
There are a handful of
vitamins that have been known to be effective for healthy hair.
Some of the main ones includes vitamin B, calcium, vitamins A, C
and E , and iron. Other than in extra form, these nutrients can
also be found naturally in citrus(柑橘类) fruits, peppers, low-fat
dairy products, dried fruits, green vegetables and whole grains. A
large salad can be made with the inclusion of a lot of these
food.

fifty to one hundred strokes right before bed can help remove
pollutions and dirt while also stimulating circulation. Also,
natural oils are released, which will add more
sheen(光泽) and oxygen to your
hair.
Section D
Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then
answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest
possible words.
In some countries
where racial prejudice in acute(严重),
violence has so come to be taken for granted as a means of
solving differences that it is not even questioned. There are
countries where the white man imposes his rule by force, there are
countries where the black man protects by setting fire to cities.
Important people on both sides, who would in other respects appear
to be reasonable men, get up and calmly argue in favor of violence-
as if it were a legitimate solution, like any other. What is really
frightening, what really fills you with despair, is the realization
that when it comes to the crunch(关键时刻),we have made no actual
progress at all. We may wear collars and ties instead of war-paint,
but our instinct remain basically unchanged. The whole of the
recorded history of the human race, that tedious documentation of
violence, has taught u absolutely nothing. We have still not
learned that violence never solves a problem but makes it even
acute. The sheer horror, the bloodshed(流血),
the
suffering mean nothing. No solution ever comes to light th morning
after when we sadly faced with the smoking ruins and wonder what
hit us. The truly reasonable men who know where the solutions lie
are finding it harder and harder to get a hearing. They are looked
down on , mistrusted and even persuaded by their own kind because
they advocate(倡导) such apparently
excellent things as law enforcement(执行),
I half
the energy that goes into violent acts were put to good use, if our
efforts were directed at cleaning up the slums and ghettos, at
improving living standards and providing education and wasted by
having to mop up the mess that violence leaves behind. In a
well-directed effort, it would not be impossible to fulfill the
ideals o a stable social programme. The benefits that can be
derived from constructive solutions are everywhere apparent in the
world around us. Genuine and lasting solutions are always possible,
proving as long as we work within the framework of the
law.
(Note: Answer the questions or complete the
statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS)
77.In paragraph 1, what do the “ reasonable men”
do with violence?
78. Recoded history has taught
us__________.
79. How can the ideals of a stable social progamme
be fulfilled?
80. According to the author, the best way to solve
race prejudice is________.
