l  Start With Your Interests

Pick something that all about your interests, whether it’s arts, computers, or fashion(时尚) design.

l  What’s Your “Type”?

Do you prefer fiction(小说)or nonfiction(非小说)(or both)?

Fiction books like novels or short-story collections can take you to another world or help you imagine something beyond your own experience. Not all fiction is the same. Try different types of fiction and see what you prefer.

Nonfiction books give you the who, what , when, and why of something. They tell stories using facts—but that doesn’t mean they’re dull. Many people read them as novels from start to finish.

Maybe you want to try a “graphic book”, which can be either fact or fiction, and is written with text and pictures, similar to a comic(连环画杂志).

l  Read the “Blurbs”

The reviews and quotes(引言) on the back and inside covers of many books are called “blurbs”. They give you an idea of what the book is about, but can also help you pick future books too. If you find a book you really like, take a minute to read the quotes(if there are any) and see which authors praised the book. Often, they’ll have similar styles and you might find you like books by those authors too.

l  Join a Club---Online or In Person

Get your friends together and share about your favourite authors, styles, and story types. Most social networking sites(地址) also have book-club sections. Join a group with your friends and people you trust.

Finally, you’ll probably enjoy what you’re reading a lot more if you find a quiet place and make time for the book. You’ll see that time does fly when you’re reading something you love!

71. Fiction books can introduce you to new worlds.

72. A nonfiction book can not be written as a story.

73. A ‘graphic book ’ is not written by using text and pictures.

B. Choose the best answer(根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案): (7)

Expressing emotions(情绪)is important rather than hiding them or keeping them inside. Everyone feels negative(消极)emotions such as anger and needs to deal with them. But there are healthy ways to express anger and ways to control it.

Shouting bad words at someone will hurt the other person or make them angry too. If you feel angry, it is best to think before you speak. Some people in the UK use the expression “take a deep breath and count to 10”, meaning take a break, breathe deeply and let yourself calm down instead of getting angry.

Another expression people use to say they are controlling their anger is “biting their lip(嘴唇)”. This means not letting the bad words come out of their mouth. If you cannot think of anything but bad words, it is probably best to “bite your lip”. But sometimes letting all your anger out can be cathartic(宣泄作用的), as long as you do it at the right place and time. If you have just had a bad day, you could go into a room by yourself and scream (尖叫)very loudly. Or if you want to hit someone or break something into pieces, you could hit a pillow instead. Then after you let your anger out this way, you’ll be able to deal with your problems more calmly.

If you do lose your temper with someone, though, you need to apologize. One way to do this is to say “pardon my French”. This expression has been used for many years as an apology for bad language. Then you can calmly explain what made you upset.

78. Why is it a good idea to “count to ten”?

      A) Shouting bad words.

   B) Controlling the anger.

   C) Dealing with the problems.

     A) To control emotions.

   B) To solve a problem calmly.

   C) To make others more upset.

   D) To feel happier about yourself.

81. Which of these would be an acceptable way to express anger?

      A) Hitting someone.

      B) Throwing a pillow.

      C) Shouting at someone.

      D) Breaking something into pieces.

82. Which phrase means not letting bad words out of your mouth? Find the answer from the passage.

It was yearbook(学校年刊)day and we were given an hour to sign each other’s yearbook in the cafeteria (自助餐厅). I was president of the class and I played sports. When I sat down at a table, people started to come over to get their yearbooks signed and to sign mine.

Among them, a weak boy with ugly teeth and thick glasses kept shaking. I had seen him around, and I knew he was always     85     . He didn’t seem sure of himself, and was so pale that it hurt us to look at him.

He came up and asked me     86     , “Can you sign this?” I took his yearbook but I didn’t know what to write. I saw that there was the name “Ricky Sanders” written on the front of it. So I wrote:

Ricky,

                                                      Signature: Will

                                              (Sign your name here)

In that moment, my attitude (态度)changed completely.

I gave him a high five and suddenly     89      at my table wanted his signature. He was asked politely to write in their yearbooks and the signature pages of his yearbook were filled up. He was smiling so big that it lit up the whole room.

When accidents become inventions

Have you ever noticed the little accidents in your life? Sometimes accidents are g    92     . They can even change your life---many useful things were invented by accident.

For example, at first, jeans were o    93     for workers. They were very s    94     and people didn’t make them become weak easily. But other people found they could last for a long time without breaking or getting weaker as well. Later on, jeans became popular all over the world.

When you see colorful fireworks, you probably don’t think about the Chinese cook who invented them in old times by accident. He mixed together some common things from the kitchen. The m    95    burnt and made a beautiful light.

The invention of the Band-Aid(创可贴) was also a surprise. About 90 years ago, Earle Dickson worked at Johnson & Johnson. His wife was always accidentally cutting her fingers in the kitchen, but she couldn’t bandage(包扎) herself up. Dickson decided to make something to help his wife cover her cuts. So he used a piece of gauze (纱布) and put it on some tape(胶布). Later, his boss made this into a popular product: the Band-Aid.

Nowadays, microwave ovens are popular around the world. But in the b    96     , people invented the microwave for the war. American Percy Spencer found that microwaves could cook. He saw a candy in his pocket getting soft when he worked b    97     the microwaves. Spencer then did many tests to p    98  that microwaves could cook food. In 1947, the first microwave oven in the world came into being.

E. Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题): (14)

My summer hols wr CWOT. B4, WE USED 2go 2 NY 2C my bro, his GF & thr 3 :-@ KIDS FTF. ILNY, its gr8.

Can you understand this sentence? If you can’t, don’t feel too bad: neither could the middle school teacher in England who received this as homework. This is Netspeak: the language of computerized (计算机化的) communication found on Internet or cellphones. If you read Netspeak for the first time, it can look like a completely foreign language. So, what is the “translation” of the sentence above? My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother, his girlfriend, and their three screaming kids face to face. I love New York; it’s great.

Schoolteachers and parents say this new form of writing is harming the English language. Increasing spelling and grammatical mistakes can be seen in students’ writing. They fear the language could become corrupted(面目全非的).

Everyone should just relax, say linguists(语言学家). They believe Netspeak is in fact more of a good thing. David Crystal, from the University of Wales, argues that Netspeak and Internet create a new language use and the almost lost art of diary writing has been picked up again. Geoffrey Nunberg, from Stanford University, agrees. “People get better at writing by writing,” he says. “Kids who are now doing text messaging, e-mail, and instant messages will write at least as well as, and possibly better than, their parents.”

Linguist James Milroy says, for centuries, it is believed without exception that young people are harming the language. And you can be sure that when today’s teenagers become tomorrow’s parents, they will think this way, too. Milroy argues that languages do not and cannot become “corrupted”; they simply change to meet the new needs.

However, Netspeakers do agree that it is important to teach young people how to speak and write Standard English. Cynthia McVey says, “I can understand Netspeak worries teachers and it’s important to make their pupils understand that text messaging is for fun, but that to learn to write proper English is necessary for their future.”

Perhaps, we should give teenagers a little more trust anyway. Erin, age 12, says, “I wouldn’t use text language in my homework. Text is just for fun.”

99.   What is Netspeak?

                                                                                .

100. The first time people read Netspeak, how do they feel about Netspeak?

                                                                       .

101. In schoolteachers and parents’ view, is Netspeak good for English language?

                                                                                .

102. What are schoolteachers and parents worried about when kids use Netspeak?

                                                                                .

103. Who thinks that Netspeak and Internet create a new language use?

                                                                                .

104. According to Cynthia McVey’s opinion, it is necessary for kids to learn to write proper English, isn’t it?

                                                                                .

105. In your opinion, why do people use Netspeak?

                                                                                .

III. When you first meet someone, talking about what you like or dislike is a good way to get to know each other. For example, if you are a football fan, you might ask your new friend about his or her favourite sports. There are many ways to express liking for something.

Your new friend may say, “I’m really into basketball.”. To be “into” something means that you have a great interest in it. Someone who is into basketball would likely follow all of the games, know all the rules of the games.

And if you have no interest in something or dislike it, there are also several ways to express that. A stronger way to say you dislike something is “I can’t stand that.”. However, unless you are with someone you know well or who agrees with you, it might not be very polite to use this. If your new friend says he’s a fan of hip hop, it would not be polite to say you can’t stand hip hop. A more polite way would be to say that you are “not too keen on” hip hop.

Talking about what you like or dislike shows what you have in common with the other person. Even if you don’t share all the same interests, you learn more about the other person and about what you may enjoy doing together.

IV. Having  dogs  and  cats  as  pets  can  be  fun,  but  people  should  be responsible for  their  pets.  Sometimes  people  decide  to  get  a puppy or kitten without considering the work it has. They may keep it for a few months and then find that they are too busy to properly care for an animal.

In this situation, it would be best to find a new home for the pet, but unluckily, some people do not do this. Instead, they leave the animal on the street somewhere. These homeless animals wander around, looking for food in the trash. Sometimes they catch an illness, which harms them and can  also harm other people and animals.

Homeless animals produce babies, which makes even more homeless animals. Puppies and kittens that are born in the streets are more likely to be wild. They will not be friendly to people like house pets. As there are more homeless animals around, the problem of homelessness becomes even worse.

Now there are seven charities that help homeless animals. They take the homeless to an animal shelter. They clean the animals up, feed them, give them medicine and try to find good homes for them.
