Excused from re cycling because you live in a high rise with a rubbish chute (
通道)? You won’t be for long. Miami’s Mark Shantzis has made it simple for those living in tall buildings to use the chute and recycle too. In Shantzis’s Hi-Rise Recycling System, a chute leads to a pie-shaped container with six boxes that can turn around when operated. The system, which fits in the same space as the chute and container now in use, enables glass, plastic, paper, metal, and other rubbish to go into separate boxes. The system is controlled from a board next to the chute door. The board has a button for each class of recycling materials ( as well as for unrecyclables). At the press of a button, a microcomputer locks all other floors’ chute door and sets the recycling container turning until the right box comes under the chute. The computer also counts the loads and gives a signal by phone when the box is full. And a particular piece of equipment breaks up the nonrecyclables.
Sorting recyclables before they are collected saves the use of expensive materials recovery equipment which otherwise has to do the sorting. Such equipment often makes recycled materials very expensive, so expensive that tons of recyclables remain wasted. Shantzis believes his system could help recycled materials become more cost-effective.

68. The purpose in writing this text is ______.
   A. to encourage people to recycle their rubbish
   B. to introduce a recycling system for high rises
   C. to describe the use of computer technology in recycling

   B. check if the container is full
   C. press the correct button
   D. break up the rubbish
71. The biggest advantage of this new system is that_________.
   A. it reduces the cost of recycling
   B. it saves time and space
   C. it saves money for people living in high rises
   D. it makes better use of the existing recovery equipment

                               ( C )
There’s chilling news for the American consumer: ice-cream prices are about to sky-rocket. According to the National Ice Cream Retailers Association ( NICRA), the price of an average cone could jump by 30% this summer alone.
Record US milk prices are combing with unexpected hikes in the cost of ingredients such as vanilla and cocoa. Economists worry that this may be only the tip of the icecream-berg: inflation seems to be resurgent(
复活).
Rising ice-cream prices are the result of what NICRA calls a “ perfect storm”—an unprecedented (
空前的) and unlikely combination of circumstances. Vanilla prices are high because storms ruined the crop in Madagascar, source of much of the global crop. And chocolate prices have been boosted by the chaotic(混乱的) security situation in West Africa, where countries such as the Ivory Coast are major cocoa producers. Most damaging of all to the ice-cream lover, US dairy prices are at a record high, the result of a sharp decrease of production and bans on the import of Canadian cattle. Butter and cheese producers have been buying up available stocks of milk, sending the futures market to an all-time high this month. Analysts say high milk prices will have an effect far beyond the ice-cream industry, and could result in more expensive cheese and pizza.
More seriously, the threat is part of a revival in US inflation—a factor that had more or le ss disappeared during the past few years’ economic slowdown. Overall headline inflation figures remain low: the 0.5% figure recorded in March was among the highest in recent months. But economists forecast a rebound this summer, as the effects of strong growth filter through to prices. In particular, prices for steel, oil, property and computer chips have registered strong gains this year. The worry is that expectations of higher inflation will lead to higher pay claims, which in turn will fuel future prices rises.

72
Why does NICRA call the rising of ice-cream prices a “ perfect storm”?
   A. Because the rising of ice-cream prices has never happened before.
   B. Because the rising of ice-cream prices has a big impact on the US economy.
   C. Because the rising of ice-cream prices is a combination of many factors.
   D. Because the rising of ice-cream prices is not likely to happen.
73. We can assume from the passage that bans on the import will affect _______.
   A. the prices of ice-cream                    B. the domestic consumers
   C. the domestic industry                     D. the government
74. How do you think higher pay claims will lead to much higher inflation?
   A. Higher pay claims will make cost higher, which in turn will raise the prices.
   B. Higher pay claims will make people much richer and more likely to buy.
   C. Higher pay claims are equal to prices rises.
   D. Prices rise is the best way to turn down higher pay claims.
75. Which of the following best summariz es the author’s opinion?
   A. Hikes in the cost of ice-cream ingredients will make consumers suffer.
   B. Rises of ice-cream prices may bring a revival in US inflation.
   C. The US economic structure needs to be reformed.
   D. Workers will be better-off as a result of higher pay.

Section C

A. The actors began to be respected by others.
B. The theater was the most important art from during Elizabet h England.
C. Shakespeare’s plays copied the Latin and Greek plays.
D. Shakespeare was interested in both the classical texts and practical knowledge.
E. The morality plays replaced the mystery plays.
F. Broad interests and creativity flourished.

76._______
It is because of his plays that Shakespeare is now considered the greatest English writer in history. The era in which he lived, Elizabethan England, was a time in which broad interests and creativity could flourish. Elizabeth, the queen, was beloved by her subjects and proved to be a powerful and able ruler. Under the reign of Elizabeth, England changed from an island kingdom to an expanding empire. England grew rich through trade. Sixteenth-century Englishmen traveled to the New World and to Africa. Music, dance, poetry, painting, and architecture flourished; but the art form in which Elizabethan England distinguished the rest of Europe was the theater.
77. _________
The theater, which had practically disappeared from Europe was, at this time, received as a part of the church service. Later, no longer as a part of the service, the “mystery plays” responded to popular taste by adding more and more comic elements. In England, they were sponsored by various trade guilds and presented on stage wagons that went from place to place. When the mystery plays began to lose their appeal, they were replaced by “ morality” plays which always taught a moral.
78._________
    In Renaissance (
文艺复兴) England, writers were particularly interested in classical texts such as Latin and Greek plays. Schools and universities began to produce comedies and tragedies by Platus, Terence, and Seneca. Shakespeare was well acquainted with classical humanities and classical tragedies and comedies often served as models in his own drama. A Renaissance man, Shakespeare’s interest went beyond book learning to practical knowledge of military strategy, seafaring, business affairs, and the new geographical discoveries, all evident in his plays.
79._______
Companies of “ strolling plays” which had specialized in morality plays responded to the change by staging new plays. Professional actors, who had been viewed by English society as little better than vagrants or criminals, gradually came under the protection of the nobility. Licensed theater companies were formed; Shakespeare belonged to one of those, where in addition to his writing, he acquired a wide experience in acting and theater management.
80.__________
The theater grew in popularity and public theaters were built, not inside the city limits but just outside, along with other places of entertainment. Theaters in Elizabethan England were patronized by all social classes. The Globe Theater, built in 1599, where many of Shakespeare’s plays were performed, had a platform stage jutting out(
伸出) into a central courtyard. The audience stay around three sides of this platform—the lower-class who each paid a penny in the pit and the wealthier spectators in the galleries above. The orchestra was on stage, as music was usually a significant part of the production. Indeed, the costumes, scenery, singing, playing, and dancing, as well as acting was essential to the total show. There was no lighting, however, plays were performed in the afternoon. Shakespeare knew his audience: his theater is addressed not just to the educated but to all classes of society.

Section D

Credit and debit cards are expected to overtake cash this year as Britain’s most popular method of payment, according to a new industry report. It will be the first time that card payments have outstripped cash outlay for goods and services. There are 246 plastic card transactions made every second. Total plastic card use is expected to exceed 269 billion in 2004, just a whisker ahead of the predicted 268 billion for cash payments, said banking industry body the Association for Payment Clearing Services.
The group, which represents the major banks, said credit cards had become “ demonized ”(
魔鬼化) as one of the main causes of ballooning debts, but added: “ Without plastic, our society would virtually stop .”
Last year, the number of plastic cards in use in Britain grew by 13 million, or 9%, to 160 million—the equivalent of 3.5 cards per adult. Two-thirds of card transactions are now made using debit cards. Plastic accounted for
244 billion of spendin g in 2003. “ This year, total plastic card use, if business card usage is included, is expected to top 269 billion. In 2005 it is expected that personal plastic card usage alone will overtake cash payments,” said Apacs. In terms of numbers of transactions, cash will remain much bigger than plastic for some time to come, it added. “ Cash will always remain there for low-value payments.”
Meanwhile, 2003 was the year that e-commerce “came of age” in the UK. More than 18 million people bought goods or services online, up 50% on 2002. Credit cards accounted for 69% of the 200 million transactions, with debit cards mopping up most of the remainder.
Last year was a landmark year for another reason—the first reduction in card fraud for eight years. Fraud losses on plastic cards fell by 5% to
402 million as measures to combat crooks started to take effect.
A new generation of cards containing computer chips is being introduced, and by the end of this year most people making face-to-face purchases will have to type their four-digit Pin number into keypads at ti lls and will no longer have to sign receipts.

82. Card fraud was reduced last year because______________________________.

83. According to the passage, what is the benefit brought about by credit cards?
