Juana’s mother was Queen Isabella I of Castile of Spain (1451–1504) and her father was King  Ferdinand II of Aragon of Spain (1452–1516). Because they were apprehensive concerning  the potency of France, they contrived a political marriage between her and the sole heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Philip the Handsome of Austria (1478-1506) .

At first Juana harbored misgivings about being betrothed to a man she had never laid eyes on.  But at the first sight of him within his palace in Flanders, she fell passionately in love with him. Forthwith, she began birthing his children.  She also became alert to her husband’s inveterate womanizing which left her consumed with jealousy and anguish.

In 1504 Queen Isabella died. Antecedent to the queen’s death, Juana’s older brother, older sister, and older sister’s son had all become deceased leaving Juana the heir to the throne of Castile.

Concurrently, her father and husband covertly conspired to usurp her throne. Traitorous political Spanish nobles had drawn up a document that Philip signed, resulting in Juana being proclaimed insane and incompetent to rule .

在宣告书上签名后没过多长时间，腓力死于斑疹伤寒症。胡安娜因之伤痛欲绝。她护送丈夫遗体去安葬地，走至半途，却被拘禁，永久失去人身自由。
Shortly after signing the proclamation, Philip died of typhus. Juana gave way to a storm of grief. While she was escorting his coffin to its final resting place, before reaching the destination she was arrested and never regained her freedom again.
