Supergirls vs. American Idol

Man I never imagined I would be here. A few years ago Supergirls
hit all the newspapers abroad . China had a
sexually ambiguous idol and a fans screaming/R&B
hits show that made the country suddenly seem quite modern.
At the time I was living in a small room on Beijing's fourth ring road. My room mates were Supergirls fanatics, it
didn't really catch on with me, but I do remember that every time I
watched the show it was all about crying. Lots
and lots of girls crying. Which is an extra thing
that Supergirls and American Idol share.
So where am I? I'm hosting Supergirls!
And what's different between Supergirls and American Idol?
I can think of one thing at the moment. Today,
the directors put me in the position of responding to queries of
the candidates who were unsure of their voice/or their wear/of
their hand movements. The whole day, lots of
girls asked me questions ranging from "where do I put my hands when
I'm singing my Tibetan tune" to "how can I look more like a woman
and less like a man." And there was lots of
insecurity. Actually it was all quite cute and
moving, one girl asked me a repeated amount of times to hug her
because she was so nervous.
But it's hard for me to imagine the American Idol set being like this. Somehow I imagine American Idol candidates
very unwilling to ask for advice before competing, and I certainly
can't imagine an American Idol candidate asking for an extra armful
of hugs from the TV host before going in.
