Alright so it's been a long time I haven't wrote English on my
blog. First off, because aside from a few friends
(and my very supportive parents) I don't know if there's anyone
else who comes on my blog who can't read
Chinese. Secondly, my English unfortunately is
lagging, I find it harder and harder to express myself.
So what have I been up to?
Well I've become a TV host for HunanTV, and more specifically
for a show called "Just Go". The premise of Just
Go is thusly: a challenging race
track--ropes/overblown footballs/a giant sized running track
machine--surrounded by water. Contestants have to
get through the track in a record time and at the end of that, they
win the show's sponsor's product: an air-conditioning (or a
"beautiful air conditioning" if I literally translate the Chinese
name). Before contestants run the track, they
enter into a small room (the "X small room" if
I translate the Chinese
literally) where they have the option to perform,
some contestants decide to propose to their girlfriends, some give
birthday gifts, some do backflips, some show off muscles, some sing
etc... The main attraction of the show (and what makes this show
one of the most watched in China) is seeing people fall in the
water in ridiculous positions. There are lots of
slow mos of those falling sequences on the show, and it's actually
quite balletic seeing the water slowly explode as they crash bottom
first.
So how do you connect becoming a singer with
becoming a TV host of hunan TV (and possibly/maybe
the first foreign female Chinese-speaking TV
host). Well first off, to become a famous singer,
you have to become a famous someone. And by far
the easiest way to do that in China is do become a TV
host. People see your face on TV every day so
they remember you. So becoming a TV
host is a blessing (although sometimes when I'm
tired of standing in high
heels and talking in a foreign language for 5
hours straight I think it's a curse). I started
off at the local entertainment channel, a channel you could watch
only if you are in Hunan province, and then before the
entertainment channel show aired, I was spotted by people at the
satellite channel of Hunan TV, and that's basically the equivalent
of a dream come true. In China Hunan satellite is
huge (in particular ever since it aired the Chinese version of
American Idol: Supergirls), it's the top entertainment channel of
the country, maybe the equivalent of HBO in the States.
Just Go, my satellite
show, will begin airing next week, and starting
then I'll be on Chinese national
TV Monday through Thursday in the 7:30PM time
slot. Already I've been getting some attention
for it. Let's see what happens when the show airs
:)
