Rid of the world's injustice, and his
pain,
He
rests at last beneath God's veil of blue:
Taken from life when life and love were
new
The youngest of the martyrs here is
lain,
Fair as Sebastian, and as early
slain.
No
cypress shades his grave, no funeral yew,
But
gentle violets weeping with the dew
Weave on his bones an ever-blossoming
chain.
O proudest heart that broke for
misery!
O
saddest poet that the world hath seen!
O poet-painter of our English
Land!
Thy name was writ in water—it shall
stand:
And
tears like mine will keep thy memory green,
As Isabella did her
Basil-tree.

(God's veil
O sweetest
lips since those of Mitylene!(此句严格讲有破格落韵之嫌。)
米提利尼(Mitylene)—爱琴海(Aegean)东部一岛城,古希腊时代著名的抒情诗圣地;
Here lies one whose
name was
writ in water."

from a story in
Boccaccio's Decameron (IV, 5). It tells the tale
of a young woman whose
family
intend to
marry her to "some high noble and his olive trees", but who falls
for
Lorenzo, one of her brothers'
employees. When the brothers learn of this they murder
Lorenzo
