的确,flatter是有“奉承”的意思,《新牛津英汉双解大词典》(上海外语教育出版社,2007)对其相关的释义为:[with obj.]lavish insincere praise and compliments upon (someone), especially to further one’s own interests(尤指为获更多的私利而)吹捧,对(人)滥用溢美之词;奉承,讨好,谄媚:She was flattering him in order to avoid doing what he wanted.
1.sweet talk。根据《新牛津英汉大词典》,sweet talk的动词释义为:[with obj.]insincerely praise (someone) in order to persuade them to do something用花言巧语哄骗:detectives sweet-talked them into confessing.侦探们用花言巧语哄骗他们坦白了;名词释义为:[mass noun]insincere praise used to persuade someone to do something花言巧语的哄骗。
You know, I think my youngest daughter was born with honey in her mouth! She can sweet-talk me into doing just about anything she wants me to do.
原文中的was born with honey in her mouth是指“她生来嘴巴里就有蜂蜜”。
Alex has been working for me over a year. He never misses a chance to say what he thinks I want to hear. He hopes I’ll assign him nice jobs and eventually promote him. But I don’t buy that kind of sweet talk so I guess he’ll be disappointed.
2.Snow job。 根据《新牛津英汉双解大词典》,snow job的释义为:informal a deception or concealment of one’s real motive in an attempt to flatter or persuade<非正式>花言巧语的奉承(或劝说):we shall need to do a snow job on him.
I've got to give the teacher a snow job to get her to give me another week. Do you think she'd believe me if I tell her I really wrote the paper, but the dog got it and ate it?
根据《牛津高阶级英汉双解词典(第四版)》(商务印书馆,1997),snow job的释义为:attempt at deception or persuasion by elaborate, often insincere, talk花言巧语的欺骗或劝说:They’re claiming that he’s not guilty but that’s just a snow job.
The smuggling group defended at the Supreme Court that they were not guilty by saying that there were cheated by their boss, but all the people at present knew that’s just a snow job.
That girl didn't show up for the interview. She said she felt so dizzy on her way that she could not drive anymore and there was no telephone around. But I have this uneasy feeling she's snow-jobbing.
