The difference in management strategy and organizational culture between china and western
What is culture? In the 1870’s the anthropologist Edward Tylor defined cultures “the complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom, and工other capabilities acquired by man as a member of society” (note 4 )
Here I will focus on the major differences between the Chinese and Western cultures about Power distance and “face”
What came up first was the huge difference between social relationships. While the western people tend to keep things informal, aiming for social equality and comfort, the Chinese rely on a more traditional, very hierarchic “pyramid” of relationships. It could be said that the Chinese people are at their most comfortable when they know their social placement and when they can be at the right level of status. The westerners may sometimes have too much ambition and pride to stick on a lower place and try to overrun a higher member of the structure, and therefore we have the good potential of causing a cultural misunderstanding.
Although there are enormous differences of organizational culture between China and western, in the trend of the globalization, many Chinese people have worked for multination or come back from abroad. ZTE usually employs these persons for management who are familiar with western organizational culture and modern management, which could shorten the cultural difference between China and western. Therefore, ZTE’s human resource strategy really benefit for the company’s international business. the goal of strategic management in an organization is to deploy and allocate resource in a way that provides it with a competitive advantage.(note 5)
Competitive advantage for the business from TBL or Sustainability Strategy.
Triple Bottom Line that consists of three main component people, profit and planet (note 6) which has deeply impacted on the international business of the enterprises. The strategic-management process is based on the belief that organizations should continually monitor internal and external events and trends so that timely changes can be made as needed. (note7). ZET critically emphasizes the TBL for its international business and maintain its sustainability development.
People :
ZTE employs 7,000 people, of whom 70 per cent hold bachelors
degrees or above and more than 2,000 have masters or doctors
degrees. the people create a tremendous success, those who work in
ZET also share in their success
Profit : It has set up five research and development centers in Shenzhen, Beijing, Nanjing and Shanghai, with two of them located in Shanghai. It has also sponsored a postdoctoral station and a joint digital signal processing laboratory with US-based Texas Instruments. Therefore ZTE has independent intellectual properties to all the core software, hardware circuits, core chips and overall design & integration. Every year ZET invest 10% of the profit in R&D to maintain its high technologies advantage in the international market.
Planet:
Recommendations to improve the performance of the company in terms of international business.
Now ZTE has entered into the mature period of high-speed development. At this stage, it carry out the new strategy in terms diversity of investment. From the analysis of current investment status, the investments are mainly concentrated on China. It is likely to gallop if through the corrective operation of capital.
First, merging with other company is the best methods for current stage strategy of ZTE’s international business. Particularly merging with the Western company, through the local company’s channel it is able to reduce various obstacle to directly enter European and North America market. Otherwise, it is hardly to get all kind of the approval.
In addition, intensifying direct investment in oversea. ZTE should directly establish the production line in the developing country to lower the costs. Such as in Africa, south east Asia or south America
