The historic place I’m interested in is the Nanluoguxiang, an ancient Hutong area with a history of more than 1000years. It’s situated in the northern part of Beijing city center, aside by shichahai. According to a Travel TV program I watched weeks ago, these neighborhoods of narrow, twisting streets represent the “real life” of Beijing, where passageways connect to courtyards of traditional compact homes.

Water flows along a stream
NLGX is where are some of the last cultural heritages of Old Beijing, and some of the few hutongs the city has preserved. It’s a nice, trendy neighborhood with quirky shops, small scale galleries and eateries. The important thing is that it is a pedestrian street, but once in a great while an obnoxious [əbˈnɒkʃəs] driver will drive his car down it, slowly though honking his horn as he goes. There are also a few bikes and scooters coming down it, all the while it is full of people who are just walking up and down it sort of as water flows along a stream. A friend of mine once recommended me a really cool restaurant just a few paces off the north part of the Nanluoguxiang called Austen kitchen, where offers the ultimately tasty sandwiches, pasta, pizzas, homemade desserts and yogurt.
I’ve been always interested in Hutongs where I can find the most authentic Beijing customs and life style. Visiting such a place must be fascinating, exhilarating and unforgettable. I have the faith that the tour could exert my passion to the city. Maybe I could stop for a while and talk with a resident in the courtyard about their leisurely life.
