     October is an exciting month. We have picture day on the 13th. Our muffin morning is on the 21st and the fall festival is on the 29th. Best of all, we will be visited by a farm animal petting zoo on the 28th. This month we will be enjoying the changes of the season by learning about leaves, doing leaf rubbings and apple themed crafts, and making apple pie.

Independence is the cornerstone of the Montessori classroom. Children feel confident and secure when they are able to complete self care tasks for themselves. Please allow your child to carry and hang up their own things as they arrive at school. You can help your child by giving them the time, space, and encouragement to dress themselves and put on their own shoes. You might try laying out two outfit choices for your child and allowing him or her to choose the outfit.

Fall weather can be chilly and unpredictable. Please send a jacket or sweater to school with your child and help him or her practice putting it on at home. We are teaching the new children the “jacket flip”. Children lay their jacket on its back, stand next to the collar, place their hands into the sleeves, and flip the jacket up and over their heads. Older friends then help younger friends with zippers and buttons.

This is the season of runny noses. We are giving the children lessons on nose blowing and hand washing. You can reinforce this by encouraging your child to blow their own nose at home. Fall is a great time for grace and courtesy lessons. At circle time we have group lessons on social graces such as pushing in your chair, saying excuse me, sitting properly at a table, and working out a problem with a friend.

The children are enjoying the new food preparation works. So far our healthier whole food snacks have been a big hit. Thank you for your snack contributions. The children are enjoying clementine peeling, apple cutting, carrot chopping, and mini bagel and cream cheese preparation.

The children are also learning to use our dish washing area to clean their snack dishes. Children love to help with these tasks at home. Items like step stools and crinkle cutters allow your child to be involved when you are working at the kitchen counter.

Our phase in period has ended and the fall, as well as our specials, has begun. Many children have art on either Tuesday or Wednesday morning at 9:15 a.m. It is very important to be on time on your child’s art day so that children can leave the classroom with the group and avoid missing any instruction time. Remember to send you child dressed for exercise on Tumble Tots Tuesdays.

Please send a backpack to school with your child on Fridays. This is the day of the week when we will be sending home your child’s work from their work drawer as well as important information from the office. Please encourage your child to keep toys safely at home rather than in pockets or back packs. Toys from home can be a source of distraction and conflict in the classroom.

This week, our mystery reader sign-up sheet will be posted on the classroom door. Please feel free to sign-up to visit the classroom on a Friday to read a book to the class. This is a wonderful opportunity to share your favorite children’s story with your child’s class. It is nice to come a bit early and see the classroom in action. We generally encourage parents to periodically take a few minutes to secretly observe through the observation glass or schedule a time to visit the classroom. The Montessori environment is a beautiful thing to see in motion.
