The behaviour of ants has long fascinated scientists. And why not? These insects have the strength to carry food up to seven times their own body weight, and set up amazingly complex colonies. In recent years, scientists also have been paying greater attention to the way in which a colony of ants can solve complex problems.
Each insect in a colony seemed to have its own agenda, and yet the group as a whole appeared to be highly organized. This was most apparent in the way in which ants travel to and from a food source. Ants form and maintain a line to their food source by laying a trail of pheromone, a chemical to which other members of the same species are very sensitive. They deposit a certain amount of pheromone while walking, and each ant prefers to follow a direction where a lot of pheromone can be found. This enables the ant colony to quickly find the shortest route.
The social behaviour of ants is among the most complex in the insect world. They communicate by touch and smell, constantly touching each other to pass on their nest odour. There are also some fairly aggressive tendencies exhibited by many ants. For example, ants have the ability to take over the nest of other ant species. The queen will attack and kill the queen of other species, and then cover herself with the odour of the other queen so she will be accepted by the colony residents.
All ants have amazing design features. They have two sets of jaws—the outer pair is used for carrying objects and for digging, while the inner pair is used for chewing. Some ants can lift food items that are up to seven times as heavy as themselves. They control the population numbers of many other species. Ants can eat animals, plants, and even the seeds of many plants.
Actually, according to what scientists have investigated, ant’s highly complex social structure, life cycle, strength, are all said to be the result of evolution.

John was waiting for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn’t, the girl with the rose. Thirteen months ago, in a Florida library he took a book off the shelf and found himself fascinated with the notes in the margin. The soft handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and insightful mind.
In front of the book, he discovered the previous owner’s name, Miss Hollis Maynell. With time and effort he located her address. He wrote her a letter introducing himself and inviting her to correspond.
During the next year and onemonth the two grew to know each other through the mail. A Romance was budding. John requested a photograph, but she refused. She felt that if he really cared, it wouldn’t matter what she looked like. Later they scheduled their first meeting—7：00 p．m. at Grand Central Station in New York.
“You’ll recognize me, ” she wrote, “by the red rose I’ll be wearing on my lapel.” So at 7：00 he was in the station looking for the girl with the red rose.
A young girl in a green suit was coming toward him, her figure was long and slim and her eyes were blue as flowers. Almost uncontrollably he made one step closer to her, and just at this moment he saw Hollis Maynell—a woman well past 40. The girl was walking quickly away. He felt as though he split in two, so keen was his desire to follow her, and yet so deep was his longing for the woman whose spirit had truly companioned him and upheld his own.
He did not hesitate. He squared his shoulders and said, “I’m John, and you must be Miss Maynell. I am so glad you could meet me; may I take you to dinner？”
The woman smiled, “I don’t know what this is about, son，” she answered, “but the young lady in the green suit begged me to wear this rose on my coat. And she said if you were to ask me out to dinner, I should tell you that she is waiting for you in the restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of test！”
It’s not difficult to admire Miss Maynell’s wisdom. The true nature of a heart is seen in its response to the unattractive.

Reading books not only broadens our horizon, but also enriches our minds. Some books are to be overlooked, others are to be tasted, and some few to be chewed, digested all life long. So far, I have read numerous books, such as magazines, novels, story books and so on. Yet one of the books that I like best is My Life Story.
It was created in 1902 by an American writer—Helen Keller, a blind, deaf and dumb person. In the book, she wrote that she had not been able to see, hear or speak since the age of one year and seven months, which made her desperately sad. When she was seven years old, she knew Miss Sullivan, her private tutor. Helen was getting happier every day. Then, Miss Sullivan helped her learn how to write English words. At first, Miss Sullivan wrote some words on Helen's hands with her own fingers again and again. Helen tried as much as possible to remember words and her efforts paid off. After that, she wrote and published many famous works, among which is My Life Story. My Life Story described her hard struggle to become an outstanding writer and educationist across the world.
It shows us a universal truth: Nothing is difficult if you put your heart into it! This is why I like it best.

Section B
Victor Hugo's masterpiece Les Miserables is a novel that comments on society and human_nature. It focuses on the tale of the main character, Valjean, whose life is changed by an act of kindness.
Set in the_early_19th century in France, the story begins when Valjean is set free after 19 years in prison. Unable to find a job, he is forced to steal from a church for survival. However, his life changes when a priest forgives him and advises him to be an honest man. Therefore, forgiveness is a central theme of the novel.
Another important theme in Les Miserables is truth against survival. When Valjean later steals some money from a child, he remembers the priest's forgiveness and regrets his crime, but it is too late. He has to hide from the police and even changes his name. Six years pass, Valjean is now living a successful new life, helping others whenever he can.
But there are more struggles waiting for Valjean before he is finally recognized as a good man. As a very long novel with complex plots, Les Miserables is truly attractive for readers and no wonder it is a masterpiece.
